Garage Door

These weeks just keep blowing by – I can’t believe we’re back at #FilmFriday again. Since last week, I’ve been doing a bit of experimentation with my new (to me) Canon Elan 7…mostly with my 50 1.4 lens. The results have been hit and miss so far, but it just means I need to do a bit more testing and experimentation with different settings and film. I have a few keepers from a brief walk in downtown Calgary – one of which you see below.

I see far too many moving staircases while at my 9-5. I figured it was time I captured one.

So…I bought a new toy. A Fujifilm X100

I placed my preorder with my local camera store a few months ago, and due to the tragic earthquake and tsunami in Japan, my camera didn’t arrive here in Calgary until yesterday afternoon (about a month after it was expected). Thankfully, none of the workers in the Fujifilm factory that was affected by the tsunami were hurt or killed.

I brought up the idea of purchasing this camera with a handful of my twitter pals…and for the most part, they were skeptical of how much use I’d get out of a pricey compact with a fixed 35mm lens. I completely understood their concern, but I really had my heart set on this camera. I’ve always wanted something small that I can carry around with me everywhere without the need to lug around a bag full of gear, and the X100 seemed to fit the bill perfectly (plus, it looks fantastic!). I guess time will tell how much use I end up getting out of it.

I’ve been nursing a serious head cold for the past few days, and yesterday was probably the worst day so far…as a result, I didn’t spend too much time outside testing my new toy. I did get a few shots from the 10 minute walk around my neighbourhood…the first of which is below.

As always, I used onOne PhotoTools (part of the onOne Perfect Photo Suite) to process this photo. If you’ve never used this amazing Photoshop plugin, I’d highly recommend it…almost every shot that hits this blog is touched by at least one onOne Software product. If you’re in the market for something like this, make sure you check out the ridiculous sale they’re having right now. The entire Perfect Photo Suite 5.5 is on sale for $349.95 from May 1 through May 15…that’s a savings of $150! You can’t go wrong.

I shot this during my very brief visit to Florence a couple of years ago. Nothing terribly exciting, but I had to capture this lone graffiti tag on what was an enormous brick wall.

Red or Gray?

I thought I might as well continue with the nighttime urban theme I’ve had going for my past two images since I’ve been having so much fun processing them. These two different coloured doors into this old brick building caught my attention…mostly because it reminded me of the classic red pill/blue pill question asked of Neo in The Matrix. So…which door will you choose?

Vegas City Centre

This is another one of my favorites from our trip to Las Vegas last month. The new Vegas City Centre complex is very cool and I didn’t spend nearly as much time there as I would have liked to (although I have a feeling I would have been given a hard time trying to take photos there with my tripod without permission). This shot was taken from across the street on the busy corner just outside Planet Hollywood. As usual, it was a pretty busy night on the streets of Vegas and there were dozens of people on the corner waiting to cross the street while I was patiently setting up and taking this shot. Before I got there with my tripod nobody was taking the time to snap any photos of this scene…but after I got my gear all set up there were at least 3 or 4 others taking photos with their point-and-shoots of the same scene! Funny how people assume that if some random guy is taking a photo of something with a big tripod setup it must be a good photo opportunity…for all they know I could be the worst photographer in the world! Anyway…let me know what you think of this one:
