When Rick Young turned off the highway and led us down a long dirt road towards the Salton Sea that ran next to an orange orchard, I wasn’t entirely sure that the location would work out. But as it turned out, this portion of the beach had some amazing photo ops and the six of us who made it down there each came away with some keepers.
A spent a good chunk of my time on this section of shoreline shooting towards the lake, but when I spotted this cracked earth and the mountains in the background I switched things up and shot in the opposite direction. I’m glad I did because as soon as I saw this long exposure on the LCD, I knew I had my shot of the day. Thanks for dragging us down that dirt road, Rick!

Yup. Winner.
Loved it in your viewfinder, love it even more now.
Cheers to Rick for such a great spot.
That’s right. Cheers to me! I love this photo Heath and grabbed something similar myself, although Mike had my 10 stop at the time. #buyyourowndamnfilteryoubastard
Are those footprints I see as well? Loving that background!
Very cool dude, really love the dramatic cracks in the foreground, the slight vignette really helps to lead your eye down and through the frame.
Duderama. This is sick. Love the wide angle distortion on the lower half of the frame accentuating the cracked earth. Spectacular shot.
Very nice composition and textures Heath. The processing really works
Wonderful shot man. It’s one of my fav things out there. The patterns the dry sand and dirt makes are just to good to pass up.
Sweet photo Heath! Love drama and the details of the cracking Earth.
Great shot Heath! Those cracks are awesome!
Love that you chose the portrait layout for this shot. Those cracks lead you right into the frame. More than just a keeper here bud, great work.
Don’t know what I can add. This is a fantastic shot. Love the angle, the leading, background, all of it. Great exposure for that desolate Salton Sea look. Nailed it!
Crackled goodness. Who knew Rick was driving us to an epic spot. Love this one Heath.
This is great! Love the cracked earth and soft clouds.
I don’t think I made it to this part of the beach! Was definitely a good find! Love the framing here and tones from the B+W! (Woo! I got to your site from work!)
Fantastic wide-angle depth. The foreground is awesome. This is definitely shot of the day for me
This is a super cool pic! (BTW… Love the “vertical landscape”!)
Great work Heath, really dig this shot.
Oh man. It’s kinda creepy but I dig it.
I absolutely love this image Heath. Beautifully composed, the softness of the clouds, the tones look. Excellent.
Great shot. Love the composition and post-processing choices.
