Sunburst – heath ofee dot com http://heathofee.com Wed, 06 Apr 2011 03:05:13 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.6 Infinity http://heathofee.com/2011/04/06/infinity/ http://heathofee.com/2011/04/06/infinity/#comments Wed, 06 Apr 2011 13:10:49 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2156 Ah, to be back in Palm Springs basking in the sun while sipping a cold one. Soon enough…

This is the second shot I’ve posted from this amazing house I had the pleasure of visiting one afternoon while in Palm Springs. Not much to say here. Beautiful day, beautiful pool…it was hard to screw this one up 🙂

Oh, one note: I downloaded a trial of Unified Color’s HDR Express last night and used it to process this image. I was very impressed with how real the tonemapped result was and the edit you see here is not far off from the raw output. I’ll be using the trial for the next 30 days and I’ll try to keep you all updated on what I think of it.

The Lounge http://heathofee.com/2011/02/18/the-lounge/ http://heathofee.com/2011/02/18/the-lounge/#comments Fri, 18 Feb 2011 13:51:49 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1817 Last night I thought I would try something a little different. Inspired by a few people (Viveca Koh, Chris Nitz, and Doug Landreth), I decided to do some experimentation with textures and frames. The shot below is a mashup of a number of layered effects from PhotoTools, three textures at varying opacities (also from PhotoTools or PhotoFrame), and a border frame from PhotoFrame. This is a bit of an experiment, so I’d love to hear some feedback. I had a lot of fun playing around with textures and frames, so I can see myself processing photos in a similar fashion in the future.

Nasty and Delicious http://heathofee.com/2011/02/17/nasty-and-delicious/ http://heathofee.com/2011/02/17/nasty-and-delicious/#comments Thu, 17 Feb 2011 14:12:11 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1804 Today, I thought I’d take you all back to the Salton Sea for some delicious urbex. This is a shot from Bombay Beach which is quite possibly the creepiest little town I’ve ever been through. It’s set up in a small grid pattern and probably measures 10 streets by 10 streets. There are still some people living there, but most of the houses and garages have either fallen completely apart or are in the process of slowly decaying. I really wanted to explore all of the amazing urbexy goodness, but to be honest, I was scared of being chased off by some crazy person with a shotgun. Probably an unnecessary fear…but you never know 🙂

Just over the hill from the main town, there’s an old beach with some completely burned/salted over homes and trailers. What was once a nice little beach is now completely abandoned and littered with dead fish. It’s a bit sad, but makes for some very interesting images.

Sun and Stone http://heathofee.com/2011/02/07/sun-and-stone/ http://heathofee.com/2011/02/07/sun-and-stone/#comments Mon, 07 Feb 2011 14:08:28 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1721 If you ever get the chance to go to Joshua Tree National Park, I would definitely recommend going. Although I wasn’t able to do any hiking while I was there, even the natural landscape close to the road is amazing. In addition to the very cool trees, there are some pretty spectacular rock formations throughout the park. I was able to capture a few of them, but I’ll be going back for more in the future.

Salton Sea – RV Park http://heathofee.com/2011/01/30/salton-sea-rv-park/ http://heathofee.com/2011/01/30/salton-sea-rv-park/#comments Sun, 30 Jan 2011 17:47:52 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1663 I think this will be the last image in the first portion of this barren Salton Sea series. I think I have some more to add, but I have an itch to get back to processing some HDR’s. Hope you’ve enjoyed the series so far!

Golden Reflections http://heathofee.com/2010/11/05/golden-reflections/ http://heathofee.com/2010/11/05/golden-reflections/#comments Fri, 05 Nov 2010 12:30:22 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1244 After a few days of grungy urbex type images, I figured I would toss some more beautiful autumn colours onto the blog just to pretty things up a bit 🙂

Typically, I try to make most of my images as completely crisp and sharp as possible, but I decided to go for a slightly softer, more ethereal feel with this image. I also decided to boost warm, yellow tones to emphasize the gorgeous evening light that day. Hope you all have an awesome Friday and a fantastic weekend!

The Longest Shadow http://heathofee.com/2010/10/14/the-longest-shadow/ http://heathofee.com/2010/10/14/the-longest-shadow/#comments Thu, 14 Oct 2010 12:43:07 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1170 It’s gotta be one of the best feelings in the world for any photographer when you take a shot, look at the LCD, and instantly know you’ve got something great. If I can can come away from a shoot with one set of brackets like that, I am a very happy camper. This doesn’t happen for me every time I go out shooting, but last week when I was at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, there was one set of brackets that I knew would work out.

The long shadows, winding pathway, autumn colours, and low sun just all magically lined up for me to take this shot. This was the last set of brackets I shot at the sanctuary that day, and I wouldn’t have gotten this shot if I hadn’t convinced myself to keep elxploring after completing a circle of half the park. Always listen to your gut. Often times it’ll give you good advice.

Diesel in Symmetry http://heathofee.com/2010/10/09/diesel-in-symmetry/ http://heathofee.com/2010/10/09/diesel-in-symmetry/#comments Sat, 09 Oct 2010 16:18:45 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1143 I think I have a problem. I seem to have quite the obsession with shooting into the setting sun at narrow apertures…those sunbursts are just so much fun! I think I’ve made a point of shooting sunbursts on the last three photo outings I’ve been on and I don’t see me quitting anytime soon. They’re really fun to edit and they add a little bit of extra interest if placed in the right spot in an image. I trust my friends will let me know if my sunbursts start getting a little old 🙂

After work this past Thursday, I hit a couple locations on the way home to take a few shots. Inspired by my friends Brian Matiash and Bob Lussier, I knew at some point I wanted to hit the industrial area here in Calgary to see if I could find anything at least half as cool as the some of the old mills these guys get to shoot in Boston. I think I made a couple good finds, and I’ll definitely be sharing more of those shots in the coming weeks, but for now here’s a little diesel in symmetry for ya.

Racing the Sunset http://heathofee.com/2010/09/30/racing-the-sunset/ http://heathofee.com/2010/09/30/racing-the-sunset/#comments Thu, 30 Sep 2010 13:15:01 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1114 Recently my friend Brian Matiash touched on the subject of photographers always racing against the sunset/blue hour, trying to make sure we get all the shots we want before that magical light runs out for the day. I’m definitely no stranger to that feeling, and found myself in exactly that situation last week when trying to get a few shots of the setting sun before I turned my attention to the harvest moon. For me it was a bit of a double race since I was also trying to catch the gaps between cars so I could set up smack dab in the middle of the road for this shot…thankfully, I found a relatively vacant stretch of secondary highway just south of the city and had plenty of opportunity.

New Blog, New Eyes, and The Eye of a Monster http://heathofee.com/2010/09/29/new-blog-new-eyes-and-the-eye-of-a-monster/ http://heathofee.com/2010/09/29/new-blog-new-eyes-and-the-eye-of-a-monster/#comments Wed, 29 Sep 2010 02:17:29 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1108 As I type this blog post I am still marveling at the miracle that is laser vision correction. I’ve worn glasses or contact lenses since I was 11 years old, and the fact that I can now wake up and go about my daily activities without needing either is really nothing short of a miracle. I’ll publish a full summary of my experiences in a week or so, but for now…on to the more exciting news: I’ve launched my new blog today!! For a long time now I’ve thought about shedding the yycofee.wordpress.com URL and moving on to a more professional photographer’s name here . com style hosting platform, but only made the plunge into getting my own domain name and hosting a couple of months ago. Since then, I’ve been working off and on trying to sift through the infinite customization options offered by my WordPress theme trying to get things looking *mostly* the way I like. The hardest part by far was trying to create a logo/header…so any feedback you have on that would be appreciated. I’m sure over the course of the coming months I’ll notice things that I want to change/add/remove, so bear with me, I just really wanted to get this thing live! On the off chance that you’re a current subscriber to my old RSS feed, you can re-subscribe to the new feed here. And if anyone still uses bookmarks and happened to have my old blog marked, don’t forget to add heathofee.com to your list!

Yesterday, I went for my first short photowalk after my eye surgery, and since my car is still parked across the city, I was limited to wherever my feet could carry me. I’ve said this before, but I live in a relatively new development, so there are still a number of large construction vehicles around almost all the time. I had walked the dog earlier in the day and saw a couple of these construction giants that I wanted to capture when I went back out with the camera…unfortunately, two of the three I wanted to shoot were in use by the time I returned. So…with only one of my locations still available, I tried to make the best of it and ended up with a few usable brackets from the one construction vehicle….the first is below:
