Prior to going to Maui, my wife bought me a helicopter tour of the island for my birthday. Probably one of the coolest gifts I’ve ever been given.
I’ll tell you one thing: it’s much harder to shoot out of a cramped helicopter than you would think. Not only were quarters close, but the curved windows had so many planes of reflection it was hard to cut them all out all the time. I did my best and came away with a few shots I’m happy with…all while experiencing Maui one of the best ways possible: from the air.
Equipment:
– Canon EOS 5D Mark II
– Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L
– B+W 77mm Circular Polarizer
This is one helluva view man, I love the depth and the variations in the color of the water, incredible dynamic range!
Great view! Love that you can see the deep greenish/blue of the ocean.
So much beautiful beach front. I’m totally jealous right now!
That blue water kills me. I want to go back to there. Really impressive work here, shooting out of that copter is extremely difficult.
This is sick…the color of the water is insane. I miss Hawaii!
Great work man! I can only imagine it’s a real pain trying to shoot out a helicopter, but you did a nice job with the framing! Dig this…gives a scale to how grand the whole place is.
Look at that blue water. Holy cow. I bet that was a fun ride. Kudos to your wife.
Man, I wanna go! That’s awesome. Not to shabby for being through a window.
Incredible scene! The colors changes in the water are beautiful.
Lovely shot Heath, right up my street. I appreciate how difficult it is shooting from a helicopter with other people up there also shooting, and as you mention the glass getting in the way. One of the biggest issues I had is that I seemed to actually catch the propellers in the shots, obviously a quick shutter release on a wide angle stopped them in their tracks quite well.
