Some areas just back from the shore of the Salton Sea are covered with a thin layer of crispy, white, salty earth. Upon first glance, this crust looks plenty hard enough to walk on, however, in some areas there are a few inches of soft mud just below the surface. I made the mistake of walking with confidence onto this crust, and just before I got to this old bathroom building, I started to sink. Needless to say, I didn’t venture far enough to actually get inside.
Simple compositions such as this can be very effective sometimes. Occasionally we may find ourselves second guessing a composition that may seem a bit too obvious or simple, but oftentimes these instinctual shots are some of the best. It’s always smart to trust your gut…and even if it doesn’t work out, all you’re out is a few megabytes.
