Yesterday I went to the Calgary Flames Superskills Competition with my dad, sister, bro-in-law, and two nephews. It was the kids’ first time watching hockey live, so it was pretty cool to see them enjoy it, and was a great experience for them.
After seeing this shot from my buddy Jesse Pafundi a while back, I knew I wanted to see if I could get my camera in the door so that I could take a similar shot of the Saddledome. Surprisingly enough, I was able to get my gear bag in the door without any trouble…I guess security wasn’t too concerned about photography during the skills competition. So, after the warm up and before the action started, I made my way up to the top of the second bowl and fired off a few shots while the Zamboni was cleaning the ice. While I did make my way back up a little later to attempt some brackets, I was happier with this single exposure. As usual, I brought this shot into PhotoTools for a bit of tweaking and then I sent it to FocalPoint to give it the fun tilt/shift effect. I think this is a fun shot, and I’m glad I have a shot of the Saddledome in my catalogue now.
I like the tilt/shift effective as well. You also managed to capture the ‘C of red’, nice work!
There is something magical about this photo. Almost looks like model photography. Cool processing!
So good Heath…love the way the focal point makes everything looks small and far away…well done. Great colors too.
Heath, this is incredible. I love Focal Point! Keep it up brother, your work is always a joy to look at 🙂
This is a fantastic image Heath, I LOVE it! Great usage of focus like this, it’s a top drawer picture for sure! 🙂
Great use of Focal point! I am always worried about taking my gear to events for the risk of being denied entry… Oh, and Go Blackhawks! 😉
Great minds think alike, obviously! I posted a stadium shot today too – http://davewilsonphotography.com/2011/01/09/ut-basketball-at-the-erwin-center/
Well done bud and thanks for the shout out! Great idea using the zamboni for this shot, looks like a toy. Came out great
Great job in post! This really jumps out at you.
Love the highlights in the scoreboard and at the back of the arena… it really adds to this shot looking mini… great job Heath!
This is awesome! Well done Heath
This was a perfect application for tilt-shift style processing.
Thanks so much for all the great comments, everyone. Glad you enjoyed the ‘miniature’ look I gave this one…it was a ton of fun to process!
yeah – top draw shot – I’ve done similar but using Photoshop before. Its a fun effect, but you need the right location, which you seem to have found.
Haha, I love this shot! It looks like this is a little miniature Hockey Rink! Nice job processing this one!
