Fall Begins https://heathofee.com/2011/09/30/fall-begins/ https://heathofee.com/2011/09/30/fall-begins/#comments Fri, 30 Sep 2011 13:10:41 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3384 Well, actually, fall is almost over here in Calgary. As the temperature starts to drop here, the leaves change colour very quickly and begin to fall of the trees within a week or two. The beauty of autumn is definitely fleeting. With any luck I’ll be able to grab a few more decent shots before the colours disappear for good.

As a few of you may know, I picked up a medium format film camera at the end of last week – and of course I fired off a roll of film within the first two days. I scanned the first batch of negatives last night and was quite pleased with the results. The larger format yields some very high resolution images and I was very happy with the image quality of the 80mm f/2.8 lens I’m using. Out of my growing collection of film cameras, I can see myself shooting with this most often.

Relaxation https://heathofee.com/2011/08/29/relaxation/ https://heathofee.com/2011/08/29/relaxation/#comments Mon, 29 Aug 2011 13:10:52 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3171 Welcome to the new look of heathofee.com. I’ve been thinking about making the site a little simpler and cleaner for a while now, and I finally took the initiative to get it done over the last couple of days. There may be a few more minor tweaks in the coming weeks, but I’m pretty happy with how it is right now. Of course, I’m open to any comments or suggestions.

There’s something so relaxing about sitting on a secluded beach all on your own listening to the waves roll in. It’s like all your cares and worries are temporarily washed out to sea with each successive wave, leaving only peace and serenity.

Equipment:
Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L
B+W 77mm 10-stop ND Filter

So much diversity of life in such close quarters. Although this photo was taken just steps from the road to Hana, I felt completely immersed in forest when taking this shot.

Life is all around us – enjoy it and capture it.

The Path https://heathofee.com/2011/03/31/london-calling/ https://heathofee.com/2011/03/31/london-calling/#comments Thu, 31 Mar 2011 13:10:14 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2104 Well, I wasn’t expecting to post this image today. I was planning on making a few minor changes to this shot before posting, but a late night at the Calgary Flames game kept me from processing and uploading something else or making the edits to this shot. So, I hope you enjoy this shot as it is 🙂

I had a great time playing with textures and experimenting with onOne Software’s Mask Pro 4.1 when processing this shot. Mask Pro is an absolute joy to use when creating complex masks. Just choose which colours you want to keep and which ones you want to drop, and the magic brush does all the work for you. I was able to create the ridiculously complex mask around all those tree branches in a matter of minutes (you can see the mask here). Absolutely amazing.

Winter Road https://heathofee.com/2010/09/28/winter-road/ https://heathofee.com/2010/09/28/winter-road/#comments Tue, 28 Sep 2010 16:12:00 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1099 We’ve been getting some pretty dismal weather here in Calgary for the past couple of weeks. Temperatures have been well below normal and it’s been grey skies and rain almost all day, every day…not a very nice September. However, one of the great (or awful) things about living in Calgary is that the weather can change at the drop of a hat…we’re supposed to be seeing highs back up into the 20’s (celsius) by the weekend! If you ever make it to Calgary I’m sure at some point during your visit someone will comment on the weather…it’s always a valid topic of conversation since you never know what’s going to happen. “Don’t like the weather? Wait ten minutes”

In the spirit of the looming winter, here’s a photo from February of this year:

Moyie Lake https://heathofee.com/2010/07/25/moyie-lake/ https://heathofee.com/2010/07/25/moyie-lake/#comments Sun, 25 Jul 2010 16:09:23 +0000 http://yycofee.wordpress.com/?p=828 A few weeks ago some buddies of mine and I went on our 2nd annual boys golf trip. The first year we took advantage of Brei’s family cabin in Invermere and this year we switched it up and went to Jeff’s place right on Moyie Lake. His cabin is absolutely fantastic and he’s right on the water which made nights by the campfire just that much more picturesque. Between rounds of golf and playing poker I managed to find a few extra minutes to set down my beer and rattle off a few brackets of the lake right around sunset one night. This set of brackets was handheld at f/3.5 and ISO 250 using my Sigma 10-20mm, and I’m actually pretty surprised at how well it turned out!

The details: 3 handheld exposure HDR tonemapped in Photomatix, Lightroom for color, contrast, Noiseware for noise control.

Pathway to the Falls https://heathofee.com/2010/05/26/pathway-to-the-falls/ https://heathofee.com/2010/05/26/pathway-to-the-falls/#comments Thu, 27 May 2010 02:57:05 +0000 http://yycofee.wordpress.com/?p=742 Wow, is spring/summer ever busy! I don’t think we have a free weekend from now until the end of June…crazy. Needless to say, I haven’t been out shooting too much in the last week because things have been so busy. While I try to find some more inspiration, here’s a photo from my trip up to Johnston Canyon a few weeks ago. This was probably half-way up the trail to the falls and I thought the curving pathway and trees made for a pretty cool scene. Let me know what you think:
