Single RAW – heath ofee dot com https://heathofee.com Sat, 02 Oct 2010 16:23:51 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.6 Something A Little Different… https://heathofee.com/2010/10/02/something-a-little-different/ https://heathofee.com/2010/10/02/something-a-little-different/#comments Sat, 02 Oct 2010 16:23:51 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1122 I’ve always been a fan of macro photography. The tiny details in flowers, insects, etc are absolutely fascinating, and when captured right, can make for absolutely stunning photographs. As someone who almost always has their wide angle lens permanently fixed on their camera, macro photography is a bit of an enigma to me, but something I’ve always wanted to try. Not having a macro lens in the bag makes this pretty difficult, but I decided to head out a few nights ago with my 24-105 to see what I could do with a perfect dandelion I had seen earlier in the evening.

Below is a 100% crop from my 50D. Not bad. I ran this as a single RAW through Photomatix and then played around a bit in Lightroom and Photoshop to arrive at the final image. Not nearly as awesome as it could have been with a macro lens, but I’m very happy I did this bit of experimenting. And who knows…maybe one day I’ll invest in a macro lens 🙂

Italian Transportation https://heathofee.com/2010/09/05/italian-transportation/ https://heathofee.com/2010/09/05/italian-transportation/#respond Sun, 05 Sep 2010 22:38:19 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1043 In keeping with the bicycle theme of my last post, I thought I’d share another image from my trip to Italy last year. This photo was taken in Florence and is probably my favorite shot from that beautiful city. I’ve always loved this type of composition…repeating patterns or objects that lead the viewer through the frame, and what better subject than bicycles in Florence!

Going back through all of my Italy photos has really brought back the great memories from that trip. I had a fantastic time with my whole family over there and I can’t wait until I get to do something like that again.

Cafe Tables https://heathofee.com/2010/09/05/cafe-tables/ https://heathofee.com/2010/09/05/cafe-tables/#respond Sun, 05 Sep 2010 22:17:45 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1028 I spent a bit of time going through my photos from Italy again last night. Seeing all of the wonderful history really makes me ready for another European vacation, although I’m not sure that’s going to happen any time soon (it’s on my list though!).

One thing I’ve noticed going back through these photos is how different my style of photography was a year ago. Interestingly enough, I think it mostly has to do with the lenses I had in my bag at that point in time…a 24-105L and a 70-200L. For most of the trip I had my trusty 24-105 glued to my 50D, and I think that lens really helped shape what kind of shots I was able to get in Italy. Since then I’ve sold my 70-200L and bought a Sigma 10-20mm…the latter is what I shoot with most often now and I know it’s had a big impact on my style of photography. What are your thoughts…has the gear in your bag ever changed your style of photography?

Details, Details, Details https://heathofee.com/2010/09/05/details-details-details/ https://heathofee.com/2010/09/05/details-details-details/#respond Sun, 05 Sep 2010 22:09:50 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1020 I just finished reading Brian Matiash’s great post from this morning and I couldn’t help but chuckle a bit. It turns out that both of us were working on photos from our Italy archive last night! Mine are from a trip I took with my whole family last May which was absolutely fantastic. We had a great time and I came home with a ridiculous amount of photos (and at that point I wasn’t even shooting brackets for HDR!).

Although I already processed the keepers from that trip last year, I’ve been having some fun going back through them and running a few of the single RAW files through Photomatix to see what kind of results I can get. I’m hoping that this exercise is fruitful enough for me to keep posting some of my re-processed Italy shots over the coming months. Last night I worked on a couple and I’m quite happy with the details I was able to pull out in this shot of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
