Mountain – heath ofee dot com https://heathofee.com Tue, 20 Mar 2012 22:11:44 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.6 The Foxes: Canmore Family Photographer https://heathofee.com/2012/03/21/canmore-family-photographer/ https://heathofee.com/2012/03/21/canmore-family-photographer/#comments Wed, 21 Mar 2012 13:10:26 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=4244 A couple of weekends ago I had the pleasure of shooting a family session for a couple of old friends who live in Canmore. To say I was excited to shoot in the mountains would be an understatement – and we couldn’t have asked for a better day. The morning was mild and the sun was shining – perfection.

Waterton https://heathofee.com/2012/02/14/waterton/ https://heathofee.com/2012/02/14/waterton/#comments Tue, 14 Feb 2012 14:10:32 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=4185 I decided to go back through the images I shot last fall in Waterton Lakes National Park to see if I could put together a couple more posts – and I think I was successful. While most of these images probably don’t warrant an entire post to themselves, taken as a set they really show off some of the beauty to be seen in the park. I’d love to be able to get back out to this amazing spot this coming summer as the lakes are absolutely stunning.

Cracking Up https://heathofee.com/2012/01/23/cracking-up-2/ https://heathofee.com/2012/01/23/cracking-up-2/#comments Mon, 23 Jan 2012 14:10:55 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=4109 When Rick Young turned off the highway and led us down a long dirt road towards the Salton Sea that ran next to an orange orchard, I wasn’t entirely sure that the location would work out. But as it turned out, this portion of the beach had some amazing photo ops and the six of us who made it down there each came away with some keepers.

A spent a good chunk of my time on this section of shoreline shooting towards the lake, but when I spotted this cracked earth and the mountains in the background I switched things up and shot in the opposite direction. I’m glad I did because as soon as I saw this long exposure on the LCD, I knew I had my shot of the day. Thanks for dragging us down that dirt road, Rick!

Sunset Clouds https://heathofee.com/2011/11/23/lake-minnewanka-clouds/ https://heathofee.com/2011/11/23/lake-minnewanka-clouds/#comments Wed, 23 Nov 2011 14:10:06 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3820 Sometimes you just get lucky.

The clouds during the sunset over Lake Minnewanka were just amazing – and sometimes you have to allow those clouds to be the main subject of your frame.

Lake #2 https://heathofee.com/2011/11/16/lake-louise-photo/ https://heathofee.com/2011/11/16/lake-louise-photo/#comments Wed, 16 Nov 2011 14:10:05 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3743 The second lake I hit on my mountain journey last week was Lake Louise – one of the most well known lakes in Banff National Park. I can almost guarantee you that it’s been shot by every photographer that comes to Banff, but I still can’t get enough of it. It’s just so picturesque and it looks a little bit different every time I visit. Last week the distant peaks were shrouded in circling cloud – something I’d never seen before, so I was happy to be able to capture it.

Mountain on Fire https://heathofee.com/2011/11/14/rocky-mountain-sunrise/ https://heathofee.com/2011/11/14/rocky-mountain-sunrise/#comments Mon, 14 Nov 2011 14:10:50 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3734 Back to Quarry Lake in Canmore for my post today. While not a shot of the actual lake, this was the view off in the distance that I was treated with as the sun started to peek over the horizon. The glow on those mountains was out of this world – seeing colour like that makes getting up early for sunrise seem worth it every time.

It was an amazing end to an awesome day.

Lake Cameron https://heathofee.com/2011/10/27/lake-cameron-photo/ https://heathofee.com/2011/10/27/lake-cameron-photo/#comments Thu, 27 Oct 2011 13:10:11 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3662 Last night I did my first bit of experimentation with luminosity masks which I’d heard of before but really had no idea what they were. Turns out, they’re a fantastic tool to help manually blend together multiple exposures for landscape photography. I didn’t do too much experimentation – just made a basic mask and applied it to two exposures to yield the result you see below…pretty sweet. If you’re looking to give it a try, this is the tutorial I used: Luminosity Masks. It was very easy to follow.

This shot is from Cameron Lake in Waterton Lakes National Park. Watching the sun rise over the mountains behind and left of the frame to illuminate the slopes on the far side of the lake was amazing. Nothing beats that golden light 🙂

Lake Cameron Sunrise https://heathofee.com/2011/09/26/lake-cameron-sunrise/ https://heathofee.com/2011/09/26/lake-cameron-sunrise/#comments Mon, 26 Sep 2011 13:10:22 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3357 On my second day in Waterton Lakes National Park, I woke up early and drove to Cameron Lake (~16 km from the town of Waterton) to catch the sunrise. I got there just as light was starting to break, but the real show didn’t start until a hour after I arrived. Due to the fact that the mountains are so close to the lake, the sun didn’t light up the far slopes until well after it had started to rise. I’m glad I waited around for the light because watching that warmth hit the mountains you see in this image was well worth it.

Lakeside https://heathofee.com/2011/09/22/lakeside/ https://heathofee.com/2011/09/22/lakeside/#comments Thu, 22 Sep 2011 13:10:00 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3340 While I was in Waterton National Park last week, I experienced two very different days. When I arrived on Tuesday morning, the entire area was socked in with low cloud and it looked as though it could rain at any moment. I was a little disappointed, but as it turned out those low clouds around the mountains made for some very dramatic images – like the one you see below of Upper Waterton Lake.

The next morning I awoke before sunrise to completely cloudless skies – quite the dramatic transformation in weather overnight. Next week I’ll share a couple images from the second day of my trip so you can see the difference.
