I’ll be sharing those photos some time down the road, but in the meantime here are a few casual frames shot on film.

Off Duty https://heathofee.com/2011/04/02/off-duty/ https://heathofee.com/2011/04/02/off-duty/#comments Sat, 02 Apr 2011 14:25:13 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2133 Well, as I write this blog post the temperature is dropping here in Calgary, and we’re waiting for yet another dump of snow in what has felt like a never-ending winter. As terrible as the winter has been here, I know that a whole bunch of you have had a trying season as well, so I figured I’d post a nice sunrise shot from Mexico to warm us all up!

The Hall https://heathofee.com/2011/02/26/the-hall/ https://heathofee.com/2011/02/26/the-hall/#comments Sat, 26 Feb 2011 19:35:36 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1897 This is another image created with Nik Silver Efex Pro 2. The ease with which great black and white images can be created with Silver Efex is pretty impressive…I probably spent less than 10 minutes creating this black and white conversion. I still haven’t tried it out on any portraits, so that will be my next experiment.

Panoramic https://heathofee.com/2011/02/25/panoramic/ https://heathofee.com/2011/02/25/panoramic/#comments Fri, 25 Feb 2011 13:52:38 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1884 Okay, so this image isn’t a true panorama, it’s just cropped that way…sorry to get your hopes up. The image title actually comes from one of the songs on the Book of Eli soundtrack which I was listening to while editing this shot. It’s an epic soundtrack and I find myself listening to it at least a couple times a week while editing photos. Oh, and make sure you check out Mike Olbinski’s movie title Wednesday photo from this week inspired by the very same movie.

So, after seeing all the hullabaloo on Twitter today about the release of Nik Silver Efex Pro 2, I decided I should probably give it the old college try. I downloaded the 15-day trial last night, and produced the image you see below. I was very happy with how the software worked and I can definitely see myself shelling out some cash once my trial version has expired.

Welcome to Paradise https://heathofee.com/2011/01/17/welcome-to-paradise/ https://heathofee.com/2011/01/17/welcome-to-paradise/#comments Mon, 17 Jan 2011 14:23:43 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1606 Upon arrival at the Excellence Riviera Cancun, this is the grand entranceway one is greeted with. At the end of the long walk down the tiled hallway, the big double doors at the end automatically open to the amazing foyer where champagne is poured for all new guests. Truly, this was an amazing place to spend a week.

I’m heading out for a week in Palm Springs, CA this afternoon, so I’ll likely be absent from blogging/Twitter for most of the week. If any of you have any last minute suggestions for places to shoot in that area, please feel free to leave a comment below or fire me a message via Twitter. Talk to you all soon!

The Calm https://heathofee.com/2011/01/13/the-calm/ https://heathofee.com/2011/01/13/the-calm/#comments Thu, 13 Jan 2011 13:57:56 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1580 Last week I posted one of the many shots I took of the decrepit pier that was conveniently on the beach of our resort. Today I’m sharing another shot of the same pier, but this image was shot using my 10-stop ND filter. I really love how the super long exposures (4 minutes in this case) create motion in the clouds and completely glass over the waves of the ocean. I’m still trying to get a feel for the filter, but I’m pretty pleased with how this shot turned out.

Another Palapa Sunrise https://heathofee.com/2011/01/11/another-palapa-sunrise/ https://heathofee.com/2011/01/11/another-palapa-sunrise/#comments Tue, 11 Jan 2011 14:06:42 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1560 What better way to start off a -21 C morning than with a warm shot of a beach in Mexico! I really love going back to these shots I took in December because it brings all the great memories I have rushing back. That’s part of the magic of photography though, right? It enables us to capture a moment and hold onto it forever.

One lesson I’ve slowly been learning when out on a shoot is to always look back when walking away from a scene, because you never know what you might be missing. On this morning, I was absolutely exhausted from waking up to catch the sunrise and after the show was over, all I could think about was getting back to the cozy bed in my room for a little more shut-eye. But, I forced myself to look back at the sunrise as I was walking back…and boy am I glad I did!

Wedding Pics! https://heathofee.com/2011/01/06/wedding-pics/ https://heathofee.com/2011/01/06/wedding-pics/#comments Thu, 06 Jan 2011 14:27:19 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1526 A bit of a cheat post today since I’m not showcasing any of my own photos. Instead I’m sharing a little taste of our wedding shots from Mexico!

As a photographer, I was definitely concerned about our wedding photos. I knew I wanted to have somebody there I could trust, but also knew that would be pretty difficult considering the destination wedding we planned. So, unsure of what his answer would be, I asked my photog buddy, Tye Carson, if he would be up for a trip to Mexico to shoot our wedding. Luckily, he said yes…and instantly my mind was at ease.

Tye is one of those guys who just has a knack for shooting people, a gift that I wish I had. He is a lover of fast primes (I think our entire wedding was shot no narrower than f/2.0) and tilt/shift portraits, and I can’t thank him enough for the amazing job he did for us. He was nice enough to send us a teaser slideshow last week before our album was finished, and he gave me permission to show it to all of you here.

You can find Tye’s website here.

The Warmth https://heathofee.com/2011/01/04/the-warmth/ https://heathofee.com/2011/01/04/the-warmth/#comments Tue, 04 Jan 2011 14:06:47 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1510 Do you ever get to a location to take some shots, and find one element in the landscape that you just can’t get enough of? For me, that element was this broken down pier. Conveniently enough, this pier was located right smack dab in the middle of the beach where we were honeymooning in Mexico, and I spent a good chunk of my sunrise time trying to capture it from a few different angles. This will be the first of a few images you may see of this pier.

As always, I took this image into Phototools after tonemapping. I applied a few of my favourite presets, the most important of which was the Golden Hour Enhancer. This is an awesome preset, and it’s really great for adding some warmth back into any image.

Wyld Stallions! https://heathofee.com/2010/12/29/wyld-stallions/ https://heathofee.com/2010/12/29/wyld-stallions/#comments Wed, 29 Dec 2010 13:54:41 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1475 Just a quick post this morning.

This is a shot from a small courtyard where we spent our honeymoon…these metal horse statues were just begging to be photographed. I knew as soon as I saw these guys I’d be naming my post ‘Wyld Stallions’ after the rock band Bill and Ted (of ‘Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure’ fame) so desperately wanted to form. “69, dude!”
