Fun – heath ofee dot com https://heathofee.com Tue, 28 Feb 2012 03:28:00 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.6 Late Summer Fun https://heathofee.com/2011/09/02/late-summer-fun/ https://heathofee.com/2011/09/02/late-summer-fun/#comments Fri, 02 Sep 2011 13:10:45 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3228 A couple of weekends ago my wife and I took a made a trip to her family cabin in BC with my parents, sister, bro-in-law and two little nephews. We had some pretty great weather and had plenty of fun relaxing out on the deck and in the big back yard. I decided to shoot exclusively on film for the weekend, so I filled my camera with some Kodak Portra 400VC and did what I could with it.

To say I was excited to get the film developed would be an understatement. I had done a fair bit of reading up on the film I had chosen, and all reviews and sample photos I saw were fantastic – great colours, fine grain, nice contrast. Unfortunately, when I got the roll developed and scanned the negatives at home, it appeared that all of my shots came out underexposed by between one and two stops. I wasn’t impressed. I’m not exactly sure where the process broke down – poor processing by the lab, crummy scanning at home, (dare I say it) poor exposure control in camera? Regardless, I used the wonders of Lightroom to bring the images back to where they should have been without losing too much detail. I guess a bit more experimentation is in order.

Have a great weekend!

Equipment:
– Canon Elan 7
Canon 50mm f/1.4

The Beach https://heathofee.com/2011/08/17/the-beach/ https://heathofee.com/2011/08/17/the-beach/#comments Wed, 17 Aug 2011 13:10:45 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3014 On the advice of my good bud Jesse, I rented a 15mm fisheye lens for my trip to Maui. He said it was the best decision he made before his last trip to Hawaii, and I can tell you that I was pretty happy to have it with me…if only to get this shot.

I drove past this tiny beach/inlet/cove/bay on the way to the location where I took this image, and knew that I had to stop and capture it on my way back. There are some scenes that just seem to be perfect for the fisheye look, and to my eye, this was one of them. The symmetry, the curved horizon, the natural curve of the bay…everything just seemed to fall into place for this shot.

So thanks to Jesse for persuading me to rent a fisheye. Without it, I wouldn’t have been able to make this shot. Moral of the story? Listen to your friends…often times their advice will pay off.

Equipment:
Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Sigma 15mm f/2.8

Maui Snaps https://heathofee.com/2011/08/16/maui-snaps/ https://heathofee.com/2011/08/16/maui-snaps/#comments Tue, 16 Aug 2011 13:10:42 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2949 I posted these photos to my personal Facebook page a couple of days ago, but after looking through them again, I figured they deserved a blog post as well.

The real reason I was in Hawaii a week and a half ago was for my best bud’s wedding. We’ve been friends since grade 1, and I couldn’t have been happier to be his best man while we were down there.

I hope you enjoy this little taste of Maui and the people we enjoyed it with.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II

Smoking Lightbulbs and Super Mushrooms https://heathofee.com/2010/03/23/smoking-lightbulbs-and-super-mushrooms/ https://heathofee.com/2010/03/23/smoking-lightbulbs-and-super-mushrooms/#comments Tue, 23 Mar 2010 19:53:34 +0000 http://yycofee.wordpress.com/?p=641 While sifting through my Google Buzz updates this past weekend I stumbled across an extremely cool link from PetaPixel. It was a photo of the smoke from an exposed incandescent lightbulb that had been Photoshopped to look like a 1UP mushroom from Super Mario Bros…extremely cool! The ingenious photographer who produced this image is Jon Beard. You can find his website here, his 1UP Mushroom photo here, and here’s a link to an instructional video he posted on how he set up for the shot. I was so inspired by this photo that I stopped on the way home from work to pick up all the necessary ingredients to try this on my own. It was pretty easy to set up and shoot and it was a ton of fun to see the results as I went through the 8 lightbulbs I bought and destroyed. I decided to pay homage (well, maybe just play copycat) to the great image Jon Beard produced by creating one of the red Super Mushrooms from Super Mario Bros. Here’s the result:

Canon EOS 50D, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0L, 102mm, F 5.6, ISO 200, 1/640 sec

I’m super pleased with how it turned out! Let me know what you think. And again…many thanks to Jon Beard for the great image and the inspiration…YOU ROCK!

**UPDATE** As per a request, here’s the original before I did any editing:
