The Foxes: Canmore Family Photographer https://heathofee.com/2012/03/21/canmore-family-photographer/ https://heathofee.com/2012/03/21/canmore-family-photographer/#comments Wed, 21 Mar 2012 13:10:26 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=4244 A couple of weekends ago I had the pleasure of shooting a family session for a couple of old friends who live in Canmore. To say I was excited to shoot in the mountains would be an understatement – and we couldn’t have asked for a better day. The morning was mild and the sun was shining – perfection.

It’s Glow Time https://heathofee.com/2011/12/07/its-glow-time/ https://heathofee.com/2011/12/07/its-glow-time/#comments Wed, 07 Dec 2011 14:10:19 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3912 Forgive the pun in the post title – I couldn’t help it 🙂

This is Quarry Lake in Canmore, AB at sunrise. Whenever I shoot mountains at sunrise or sunset, it’s always a bit of a surprise when sun gets to just the right angle to light up the mountain peaks. And then, of course, it’s a scramble to find all the compositions you want before that perfect light disappears.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L

Mountain on Fire https://heathofee.com/2011/11/14/rocky-mountain-sunrise/ https://heathofee.com/2011/11/14/rocky-mountain-sunrise/#comments Mon, 14 Nov 2011 14:10:50 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3734 Back to Quarry Lake in Canmore for my post today. While not a shot of the actual lake, this was the view off in the distance that I was treated with as the sun started to peek over the horizon. The glow on those mountains was out of this world – seeing colour like that makes getting up early for sunrise seem worth it every time.

Be There https://heathofee.com/2011/11/09/be-there/ https://heathofee.com/2011/11/09/be-there/#comments Wed, 09 Nov 2011 15:17:59 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3721 Yesterday I treated myself to an all day, sunrise to sunset shoot in the Rocky Mountains. I feel like I neglected the amazing scenery I live so close to again this summer, so I thought one last day in the mountains before it starts getting really cold was necessary.

I didn’t really have any set plans as to where I was going except for sunrise. I picked Quarry Lake in Canmore as my first location because it wouldn’t take me too long to get there and I’d never shot there before. I arrived well before sunrise and did a bit of scouting for locations. Once I found my spot it felt like ages until that amazing glow started to appear on the mountains – but it was worth it. I know I got some great stuff of the frozen lake and mountains – but one of the coolest shots I think I got was the one you see below. It was 100% a case of ‘F8 and Be There’. While my other body was capturing some long exposures, I had my second body in hand rattling off some single frames of the amazing colours. At one point I saw a bird out of the corner of my eye, so I wheeled, framed, and fired and managed to capture it’s silhouette against the fiery clouds. Not an epic landscape, but a frame I’m very pleased with nonetheless.

I’ll likely start showing some of the lake photos from the day I’m calling ’12 hours, 6 lakes, 3 cameras, 1 man’ (cheesy, I know ;)) next week. Stay tuned!

– Canon EOS 50D

Two Roads… https://heathofee.com/2011/05/20/two-roads/ https://heathofee.com/2011/05/20/two-roads/#comments Fri, 20 May 2011 13:10:04 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2341 Welcome to what I hope will be a weekly feature on the blog I’m calling ‘Film Friday’. Since I was recently gifted with a Holga 135, I decided I should probably showcase at least one photo from this cool toy camera every week. The shots I post here on Fridays will be straight negative scans of the film with no modifications…what’s the point of buying a toy camera for all the imperfections if you just fix them in post? I hope you enjoy my little foray back into the realm of film photography!

This shot is from my day trip to Grassi Lakes last week. Upon entering the trail head just up from the parking lot, one is greeted with this sign. Which way do you find yourself leaning when given this choice on a daily basis?

Mossy Flow https://heathofee.com/2011/05/13/mossy-flow/ https://heathofee.com/2011/05/13/mossy-flow/#comments Fri, 13 May 2011 13:10:52 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2334 I took the day off work on Wednesday and used my time to drive out to the mountains for a bit of a photo excursion. On the recommendation from a co-worker, I made my way to Grassi Lakes which is just around the corner from the Canmore Nordic Centre where all the cross-country skiing events were held during the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. After a short hike, I reached the two small lakes, and the colour was just amazing. Both mountain lakes shone with a rich blue/green hue…it really was beautiful. However, what I really wanted to shoot was the waterfall just slightly downstream from these lakes…so I made my way down to where I could hear running water found exactly what I was looking for. Water tumbled down a steep cliff face and cascaded around old fallen logs and mossy rocks. Jackpot.
