Autumn – heath ofee dot com https://heathofee.com Fri, 05 Jul 2013 16:30:01 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.6 fernandes family https://heathofee.com/2012/10/09/savio/ https://heathofee.com/2012/10/09/savio/#comments Tue, 09 Oct 2012 13:25:16 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=4913 I met Simon and Megan through the co-ed soccer team that my wife and I play on a few years ago. They are truly two of the nicest people I know, and I’m glad to be able to number them among my friends. Just over a year ago they welcomed their ridiculously cute son, Savio into the world and I was more than happy to shoot some portraits for them a couple of weeks ago.

Autumn is just so darned beautiful.

We totally lucked out with the weather and had a fun evening walking around Fish Creek Park.

The Colours https://heathofee.com/2012/09/20/the-colours/ https://heathofee.com/2012/09/20/the-colours/#comments Thu, 20 Sep 2012 13:55:24 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=4815 I had a few minutes before a family shoot last night so I grabbed a few quick frames of the swiftly turning leaves here in Calgary. Autumn is fleeting here, but the short time we get is beautiful.

The Neeks: Calgary Family Photographer https://heathofee.com/2011/11/01/calgary-family-photographer-2/ https://heathofee.com/2011/11/01/calgary-family-photographer-2/#comments Tue, 01 Nov 2011 13:10:47 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3626 A couple weeks ago I had some friends give me a call on a Friday night wondering if I could do a quick mini family session for them the next day as they were looking for a few photos they could use for Christmas cards. I gladly obliged as I knew I would have a ton of fun with their two kids.

Bowness Park proved to be an awesome location as there were still a bunch of trees that had yet to lose their leaves providing some awesome colour for the shoot. Gotta love that autumn colour!

Hidden Gem https://heathofee.com/2011/10/11/flatiron-building-nyc-photo/ https://heathofee.com/2011/10/11/flatiron-building-nyc-photo/#comments Tue, 11 Oct 2011 13:10:58 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3463 Last Tuesday my wife and I left for a 5-day trip to New York City – so that’s why my blog has been hopelessly static for the last little while. It was our first time to the big apple, and we weren’t disappointed, although our legs and feet suffered a bit from all of the walking. We had a great few days exploring the city by ourselves and then I had a day and a half of epic shooting with an amazing group of photographers.

I have to send out thanks to Mike Olbinski, Jesse Pafundi, Jacob Lucas, Brian Furbush, Steve Beal, Chris Robins, Brian Matiash, Chris DeAngelis, Scott Wyden and Rich Williams for making this visit to a new city feel like home. I had such an amazing time hanging out and shooting with you guys and I can’t wait to see the amazing images you all post to your blogs!

One of the biggest challenges I found trying to photograph NYC was trying to find unique compositions of oft-photographed locations. I wasn’t always successful and I definitely have a few shots that you’ve likely seen before – but that’s okay. Sometimes you just have to get the shot. The one building I really wanted to find a unique take on was the Flatiron Building. I did my best to explore the entire square that surrounds it to find a shot that may not be quite as common as those you’ve seen before. I hope I succeeded, but either way I’m pleased with this image.

Fish Creek Park: Calgary Family Photographer https://heathofee.com/2011/10/03/calgary-family-photographer/ https://heathofee.com/2011/10/03/calgary-family-photographer/#comments Mon, 03 Oct 2011 13:10:01 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3398 Last week marked the third year in a row that I’ve photographed this family – and it gets more fun each time. The energy of these three girls is infectious and I can’t help but have a great time whenever I’m shooting them.

Watching these three grow over the years has been fantastic, and I can’t wait to capture their smiling faces again next year 🙂

Fall Begins https://heathofee.com/2011/09/30/fall-begins/ https://heathofee.com/2011/09/30/fall-begins/#comments Fri, 30 Sep 2011 13:10:41 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3384 Well, actually, fall is almost over here in Calgary. As the temperature starts to drop here, the leaves change colour very quickly and begin to fall of the trees within a week or two. The beauty of autumn is definitely fleeting. With any luck I’ll be able to grab a few more decent shots before the colours disappear for good.

As a few of you may know, I picked up a medium format film camera at the end of last week – and of course I fired off a roll of film within the first two days. I scanned the first batch of negatives last night and was quite pleased with the results. The larger format yields some very high resolution images and I was very happy with the image quality of the 80mm f/2.8 lens I’m using. Out of my growing collection of film cameras, I can see myself shooting with this most often.

Vermilion Sunrise https://heathofee.com/2011/09/20/vermilion-sunrise/ https://heathofee.com/2011/09/20/vermilion-sunrise/#comments Tue, 20 Sep 2011 13:10:01 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3323 It had been a long time since I last shot a sunrise, so when Rick and his gang suggested we hit the Vermilion Lakes just outside the Banff townsite, I was pretty excited. We awoke about an hour before the sun was to rise and made the longer-than-expected drive from Lake Louise back to the Vermilion Lakes. Unfortunately, the lack of clouds in the sky made the pre-dawn light a bit less than ideal, but as soon as the sun rose above the mountains the lakes were bathed in delicious golden light.

There were probably 8 or 10 photographers in this area when the sun came up all jostling for a few great compositions that were to be had with some rocks and tree stumps in the water. In an effort to avoid the crowd and find something unique, I ventured just a little ways away and found this little dock which I instantly loved. I spent a good amount of time framing a bunch of shots in this location and couldn’t be happier with what I came home with.

Golden Reflections https://heathofee.com/2010/11/05/golden-reflections/ https://heathofee.com/2010/11/05/golden-reflections/#comments Fri, 05 Nov 2010 12:30:22 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1244 After a few days of grungy urbex type images, I figured I would toss some more beautiful autumn colours onto the blog just to pretty things up a bit 🙂

Typically, I try to make most of my images as completely crisp and sharp as possible, but I decided to go for a slightly softer, more ethereal feel with this image. I also decided to boost warm, yellow tones to emphasize the gorgeous evening light that day. Hope you all have an awesome Friday and a fantastic weekend!

The Longest Shadow https://heathofee.com/2010/10/14/the-longest-shadow/ https://heathofee.com/2010/10/14/the-longest-shadow/#comments Thu, 14 Oct 2010 12:43:07 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1170 It’s gotta be one of the best feelings in the world for any photographer when you take a shot, look at the LCD, and instantly know you’ve got something great. If I can can come away from a shoot with one set of brackets like that, I am a very happy camper. This doesn’t happen for me every time I go out shooting, but last week when I was at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, there was one set of brackets that I knew would work out.

The long shadows, winding pathway, autumn colours, and low sun just all magically lined up for me to take this shot. This was the last set of brackets I shot at the sanctuary that day, and I wouldn’t have gotten this shot if I hadn’t convinced myself to keep elxploring after completing a circle of half the park. Always listen to your gut. Often times it’ll give you good advice.
