Art – heath ofee dot com https://heathofee.com Sat, 27 Nov 2010 15:40:01 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.6 Busted https://heathofee.com/2010/11/27/busted/ https://heathofee.com/2010/11/27/busted/#comments Sat, 27 Nov 2010 15:40:01 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1395 I’ve been having a bit of fun for the past couple of days going back through the photos from the trip I took to Italy in 2009. A lot of the shots are not up to my current standards, so it’s been a bit of a challenge to find some that are worth re-processing to share. It’s a challenge, but fun nonetheless, if only to see the progression I’ve made as a photographer over the last year and a half.

This is a close-up of one of the many busts on display in the Coliseum in Rome. I probably should have written down whose likeness this is when taking the photo, but I didn’t…so we’ll just say it’s a famous Roman emperor 😉 I decided to send this single RAW image through Photomatix Pro to see what kind of extra detail I could bring out. Even with only one exposure it did a great job of accentuating the textures and age in the stone. I then used onOne Phototools to help define the shadows and highlights to add a bit more punch. Hope you like this ‘in-your-face’ image 🙂

Bellagio Ceiling – Chihuly https://heathofee.com/2010/09/05/bellagio-ceiling-chihuly/ https://heathofee.com/2010/09/05/bellagio-ceiling-chihuly/#respond Sun, 05 Sep 2010 22:07:38 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1017 This photo is 100% inspired by Trey Ratcliff over at Stuck in Customs. After seeing the images he was able to capture in Las Vegas, I made a point to try and find a few of the locations and see what I could come up with.

The picture below is a set of 3 handheld brackets of the amazing ceiling installation in the lobby of the Bellagio. All the glass sculpture is done by Dale Chihuly and you can find a few more of his masterpieces around Las Vegas…they really are quite stunning.

Device to Root Out Evil – Dennis Oppenheim https://heathofee.com/2010/06/25/device-to-root-out-evil-dennis-oppenheim/ https://heathofee.com/2010/06/25/device-to-root-out-evil-dennis-oppenheim/#comments Fri, 25 Jun 2010 17:18:30 +0000 http://yycofee.wordpress.com/?p=770 I took the day off work yesterday and went for a decent photowalk downtown early in the morning. I got a few really cool shots of the new Palliser South building which I’ll share next week, but today I want to show you all an awesome outdoor art installation in Ramsey. This piece is called “Device to Root Out Evil” by Dennis Oppenheim. Until a couple of years ago the piece was in Vancouver, but it was brought out to Calgary by the Glenbow Museum and placed in a small grassy area in Ramsey (just off Spiller Road on 24th Ave). The clouds were just awesome when I showed up there yesterday morning so I had a ton of fun shooting this amazing piece of art. I hope you like the finished product below…I’ll probably share a couple more shots in the future.

Canon EOS 50D, Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5, 10mm, F 11, ISO 100, 3 Exposures

The details: 3 exposure HDR tonemapped in Photomatix, Lightroom for contrast and clarity, Noiseware for noise reduction.

Oh, I have to throw out a hat tip to Chelsey over at Wishing Star Photography who brought this cool piece of art to my attention. Thanks Chelsey!

Jamieson Place – Downtown Calgary https://heathofee.com/2010/02/21/jamieson-place-downtown-calgary/ https://heathofee.com/2010/02/21/jamieson-place-downtown-calgary/#comments Sun, 21 Feb 2010 15:37:50 +0000 http://yycofee.wordpress.com/?p=603 This weekend I’ve been on call for work which means I have to come into the office for a few hours each day. Since I was already going to be downtown I figured I might as well pack along my camera gear and go out for a morning photowalk each day to practice my HDR photography. Yesterday I got out for just over an hour before I had to head back to the office to finish up, but managed to walk from my office (the Suncor Energy Centre) to Prince’s Island Park and back taking photos all along the way. My travels took me past the new Jamieson Place building which is still under construction. The hanging sculptures just outside the entrance and in the lobby are pretty amazing so I stopped to take a few shots. I processed a few of the images from my walk last night and this one of Jamieson Place was one of my favorites.

This is a 3 shot HDR (-2, 0, +2) processed in Photomatix with some small adjustments in Lightroom.

Canon EOS 50D, Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5, 13mm, F 11, ISO 100, 3 Exposures

Let me know what you think of the processing…it might be a bit heavy but I think I like the effect. Also, this photo has a bit too much noise for my liking but the noise reduction algorithms in Lightroom don’t seem to be very powerful. Does anyone know if Photoshop is better for this?? Or should I just suck it up and get myself a copy of NoiseWare??
