Prior to meeting up with Rick Louie and the rest of the photography group he was with in Banff, I’d never attempted any night photography. That’s not to say I’ve never taken photos at night before, but I’ve never attempted to capture a landscape in near pitch black before. The evening I arrived, we all made our way to the shores of Moraine Lake after the sun had set for some long exposures under the moonlight. Our images would have been a bit more dramatic had the moon made it’s way over the mountains on the left before we got too cold to continue, but I’m relatively happy with how this turned out. I was a bit unsure how to process this shot, so I ended up leaving it quite close to the way it came out of the camera – I’ll have to experiment some more with this type of photography.
Equipment:
– Canon EOS 5D Mark II
– Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L
Love the bright pop from the kayaks…adds another dimension to the shot. How long was the exposure?
Love this one, Heath.
One day, I will visit Banff and witness all this beauty myself.
Love this so much, Heath.
Wonderful image Heath. Moraine Lake is one of my favorites and I’ll have to try this type of shot. Those canoes are outstanding.
Love the inclusion of the kayaks, adds some nice color to the shot.
Awesome! I love this. Really well done. The idea to include the canoes was a winner in my book.
Awesome Heath! I’m with you on the processing part of these…I’ve done like 1-2 images at night for stars like this one, and I wasn’t sure what to do with it…but I’m gonna post it sometime anyways 🙂
Pretty sweet shot. Wondering myself what the exposure was on this. You have a decent amount of movement there.
Well done! This came out really nice! Another tool in the arsenal for you. I need to get around to processing mine.
Really cool motion Heath! Love the contrast of the blur of the stars against the crisp mountains.
Night photography – especially landscapes – is awesome fun. I really enjoy the challenge too. This is a great shot man… I love Moraine lake.
What’s illuminating the top of the mountain there? Is that the moon out of the frame?
I think its a terrific shot. I love the kayaks in the foreground and the streaking stars.
Even at night that place is amazing. I like the canoes in the frame to give it a slight classic lake shot.
Excellent capture. Almost feels like a day time long exposure! Nicely done Heath!!!
really like the colors and details throughout.
