Yellow – heath ofee dot com http://heathofee.com Thu, 20 Sep 2012 12:28:06 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.6 The Colours http://heathofee.com/2012/09/20/the-colours/ http://heathofee.com/2012/09/20/the-colours/#comments Thu, 20 Sep 2012 13:55:24 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=4815 I had a few minutes before a family shoot last night so I grabbed a few quick frames of the swiftly turning leaves here in Calgary. Autumn is fleeting here, but the short time we get is beautiful.

Sunset Clouds http://heathofee.com/2011/11/23/lake-minnewanka-clouds/ http://heathofee.com/2011/11/23/lake-minnewanka-clouds/#comments Wed, 23 Nov 2011 14:10:06 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3820 Sometimes you just get lucky.

The clouds during the sunset over Lake Minnewanka were just amazing – and sometimes you have to allow those clouds to be the main subject of your frame.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L

Fall Begins http://heathofee.com/2011/09/30/fall-begins/ http://heathofee.com/2011/09/30/fall-begins/#comments Fri, 30 Sep 2011 13:10:41 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3384 Well, actually, fall is almost over here in Calgary. As the temperature starts to drop here, the leaves change colour very quickly and begin to fall of the trees within a week or two. The beauty of autumn is definitely fleeting. With any luck I’ll be able to grab a few more decent shots before the colours disappear for good.

As a few of you may know, I picked up a medium format film camera at the end of last week – and of course I fired off a roll of film within the first two days. I scanned the first batch of negatives last night and was quite pleased with the results. The larger format yields some very high resolution images and I was very happy with the image quality of the 80mm f/2.8 lens I’m using. Out of my growing collection of film cameras, I can see myself shooting with this most often.

Vermilion Sunrise http://heathofee.com/2011/09/20/vermilion-sunrise/ http://heathofee.com/2011/09/20/vermilion-sunrise/#comments Tue, 20 Sep 2011 13:10:01 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3323 It had been a long time since I last shot a sunrise, so when Rick and his gang suggested we hit the Vermilion Lakes just outside the Banff townsite, I was pretty excited. We awoke about an hour before the sun was to rise and made the longer-than-expected drive from Lake Louise back to the Vermilion Lakes. Unfortunately, the lack of clouds in the sky made the pre-dawn light a bit less than ideal, but as soon as the sun rose above the mountains the lakes were bathed in delicious golden light.

There were probably 8 or 10 photographers in this area when the sun came up all jostling for a few great compositions that were to be had with some rocks and tree stumps in the water. In an effort to avoid the crowd and find something unique, I ventured just a little ways away and found this little dock which I instantly loved. I spent a good amount of time framing a bunch of shots in this location and couldn’t be happier with what I came home with.

Prairie Vibrance http://heathofee.com/2011/08/22/prairie-vibrance/ http://heathofee.com/2011/08/22/prairie-vibrance/#comments Mon, 22 Aug 2011 13:10:07 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2856 In keeping with the panorama theme from Friday, I figured I’d share this shot from my home province of Alberta. Now, this isn’t a panorama in the truest sense – it’s just a wide aspect crop of a single frame. The original included much more of the fresh, black pavement and I felt it ate up too much of the frame. There’s nothing wrong with some creative cropping every now and then 🙂

Any guesses on what that yellow crop is?

Ocean Gash http://heathofee.com/2011/08/15/ocean-gash/ http://heathofee.com/2011/08/15/ocean-gash/#comments Mon, 15 Aug 2011 13:10:42 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2996 I absolutely love having the ocean as a subject for long exposures. No matter how wild and aggressive the seas are, a 30 second or minute long exposure will calm the scene right down and leave the viewer with a whole different world to look at.

On the day I shot this, the wind was absolutely howling across the water and the ocean was ripping into the gash in the lava rock on the left of the frame. Despite what may seem like a furious scene from my description, I found myself completely at peace just watching the water come in and go out. What better way to capture the mood than with a long exposure.

Shot with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens, and a B+W 77mm 10-stop ND filter.

Fields of Yellow http://heathofee.com/2011/08/12/fields-of-yellow/ http://heathofee.com/2011/08/12/fields-of-yellow/#comments Fri, 12 Aug 2011 13:10:54 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2939 I thought I’d switch things up for the last day of the week. While I have quite a few images shot on film from my time in Hawaii, I stumbled across this one and just couldn’t pass it up. Enjoy #FilmFriday 🙂

If you’re wondering exactly what camera I used to take this shot, it’s a Holga 135. I’m loving it so far, and the more I use it the more imperfections I start to get…which is the whole idea of shooting with a Holga, right?

The Dry Side http://heathofee.com/2011/08/11/the-dry-side/ http://heathofee.com/2011/08/11/the-dry-side/#comments Thu, 11 Aug 2011 13:10:36 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2932 One of the most amazing things about Maui is the extremely diverse ecosystem. On one tiny island you can find rainforest full of ridiculous waterfalls, rugged coastline with aggressive surf, dry, arid hillsides with scrubby brush, and gorgeous white sand beaches. And all of this can be seen during a days worth of driving. Crazy.

Today’s shot is from the drier, west side of the island just south of Lahaina.

Spring http://heathofee.com/2011/05/17/spring/ http://heathofee.com/2011/05/17/spring/#comments Tue, 17 May 2011 13:10:49 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2359 It’s slowly looking more and more like spring here in Calgary; the grass is starting to green up, and buds are beginning to appear on the trees. After such a long, cold, and snowy winter, it’s extremely relieving to see the weather finally starting to change. In the spirit of spring, I’ve decided to post a floral macro today. This was shot with my X100 in ‘macro mode’ which effectively decreases the minimum focus distance to enable close up shots. While it’s definitely not as impressive as a specialized macro lens, it’s not too bad for a small handheld.

RCAF 273 http://heathofee.com/2011/04/26/rcaf-273/ http://heathofee.com/2011/04/26/rcaf-273/#comments Tue, 26 Apr 2011 13:10:24 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2267 We as photographers always hope for ideal conditions when we head out for a shoot, but unfortunately, things don’t always work out as planned. When conditions don’t pan out exactly as planned, it’s important to keep shooting and make the best of what you’re dealt…you never know what kind of inspiration you’ll be able to find.

I found myself in this situation last week when I made a visit to the Aero Space Museum of Calgary. I arrived and paid my $10 to get in, only to find the Calgary Airport Authority setting up a stage, speakers and hundreds of chairs in preparation for their annual general meeting the following day. As a result, some of the planes were re-positioned (closer together of course) to make room for the stage and chairs. Conditions were most definitely not ideal for shooting, but I made the best of it and found as many interesting shots as I could given the conditions. With any luck I’ll have another couple to share from my short visit.
