The clouds during the sunset over Lake Minnewanka were just amazing – and sometimes you have to allow those clouds to be the main subject of your frame.

As a few of you may know, I picked up a medium format film camera at the end of last week – and of course I fired off a roll of film within the first two days. I scanned the first batch of negatives last night and was quite pleased with the results. The larger format yields some very high resolution images and I was very happy with the image quality of the 80mm f/2.8 lens I’m using. Out of my growing collection of film cameras, I can see myself shooting with this most often.

There were probably 8 or 10 photographers in this area when the sun came up all jostling for a few great compositions that were to be had with some rocks and tree stumps in the water. In an effort to avoid the crowd and find something unique, I ventured just a little ways away and found this little dock which I instantly loved. I spent a good amount of time framing a bunch of shots in this location and couldn’t be happier with what I came home with.

Any guesses on what that yellow crop is?

On the day I shot this, the wind was absolutely howling across the water and the ocean was ripping into the gash in the lava rock on the left of the frame. Despite what may seem like a furious scene from my description, I found myself completely at peace just watching the water come in and go out. What better way to capture the mood than with a long exposure.
Shot with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens, and a B+W 77mm 10-stop ND filter.
]]>If you’re wondering exactly what camera I used to take this shot, it’s a Holga 135. I’m loving it so far, and the more I use it the more imperfections I start to get…which is the whole idea of shooting with a Holga, right?
]]>Today’s shot is from the drier, west side of the island just south of Lahaina.
]]>I found myself in this situation last week when I made a visit to the Aero Space Museum of Calgary. I arrived and paid my $10 to get in, only to find the Calgary Airport Authority setting up a stage, speakers and hundreds of chairs in preparation for their annual general meeting the following day. As a result, some of the planes were re-positioned (closer together of course) to make room for the stage and chairs. Conditions were most definitely not ideal for shooting, but I made the best of it and found as many interesting shots as I could given the conditions. With any luck I’ll have another couple to share from my short visit.
