Waterfall – heath ofee dot com http://heathofee.com Wed, 21 Dec 2011 13:53:26 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.6 Maui – IV http://heathofee.com/2011/12/21/maui-iv/ http://heathofee.com/2011/12/21/maui-iv/#comments Wed, 21 Dec 2011 14:10:16 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=4000 The fourth instalment in my Maui collection. Such great memories from this trip 🙂

We stopped quite a few times along the road to Hana to see if we could find some of the waterfalls described in our guidebook. This bamboo forest was along one of the first and most exciting hikes we took to find a set of secluded falls. It was muddy, humid, and slightly dangerous – so it was SUPER fun 🙂

Waterfalls. There are plenty of those in the rainforest along the road to Hana. These are just a few that we were able to see.

We were lucky enough to be able to take a 1-hour helicopter ride during our time in Maui. This shot was taken just as we came through the clouds on the way to the top of the Haleakala crater. Such a cool sight.

One day I drove myself from Kihei all the way along the west and north coastal roads to central Maui. Parts of this road were only just wide enough for a single vehicle, so it was a pretty fun drive.

Taking this shot with the fisheye exaggerates how wide this road was. In reality, it’s a single lane, 180 degree blind uphill corner. Awesomeness.

This wreck was in my guidebook, but you really have to see it to believe it. I had to hike a good 300 yards off the road and through two fences to get to this destroyed vehicle on the coastal cliffs. Your guess is as good as mine as to how it got there.

A sunset on our beach.

A view of the rugged volcanic coastline on the far southwest tip of Maui. You can’t tell, but the wind was ridiculously strong here – I was wiping salt spray off my lenses all morning.

For some reason this view reminded me of a scene straight from Africa. Felt like I could have been on a safari.

The cliffs on the northwest coast of Maui were amazing. Such fantastic views.

I think I may have enough images for one more Maui post like this. Hope you’re not getting sick of these yet!

Equipment:
Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Canon Fisheye EF 15mm f/2.8
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L

Maui – III http://heathofee.com/2011/12/19/maui-iii/ http://heathofee.com/2011/12/19/maui-iii/#comments Mon, 19 Dec 2011 14:33:43 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3983 Another instalment of Maui images today. Unfortunately, I haven’t got time to give the brief descriptions of each photo as I’ve done for the past two.

Hope you enjoy the scenery!

Roadside Falls http://heathofee.com/2011/09/23/roadside-falls/ http://heathofee.com/2011/09/23/roadside-falls/#comments Fri, 23 Sep 2011 13:10:10 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3345 While I was in the Lake Louise area with Rick Louie last week, I took a bit of time to experiment with some long exposures on film. Armed with my Canon Elan 7 and a roll of Kodak Ektar 100, I let loose for a few exposures on the roadside falls we found. I polished the roll off a couple nights ago and got it developed and scanned last night – and boy was I happy with the results. Ektar has great colour saturation and punchy contrast which is just how I like my landscape images, oh, and there’s hardly any visible grain, which is crazy. I’ll definitely be shooting more Ektar in the future.

Cool Water http://heathofee.com/2011/09/19/cool-water/ http://heathofee.com/2011/09/19/cool-water/#comments Mon, 19 Sep 2011 13:10:36 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3319 Last Sunday and Monday I had the pleasure of meeting and shooting with Rick Louie of Hansrico Photography. He was up in my neck of the woods from his home in Colorado on a photography trip with 8 or 9 other shooters from across North America. Sounds like they had a great time in and around the Banff area and I was happy to be able to spend an evening with them all.

The first spot Rick wanted to hit with me was a small hillside creek that created a ridiculous quantity of small waterfalls. He and the crew had stumbled upon the location earlier in the trip, and I’m glad they did as I could have spent hours shooting these little falls. Below is one of my faves from that location.

Equipment:
Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L
B+W 77mm Circular Polarizer Filter

Wapta Falls http://heathofee.com/2011/06/21/wapta-falls/ http://heathofee.com/2011/06/21/wapta-falls/#comments Tue, 21 Jun 2011 13:10:41 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2569 Let me tell you, the 2km hike to get to Wapta Falls is well worth it. This huge waterfall is very impressive to see, and my photo definitely does not do it justice. The sound is extraordinary and the sheer volume of water flowing over the falls every second is truly something to behold. Unfortunately, without some sort of small boat or the will to get wet and cold, there isn’t an easy way to get a shot of the falls from the bottom. So I had to make do with the few compositions I could find, and this is my favourite.

Mossy Flow http://heathofee.com/2011/05/13/mossy-flow/ http://heathofee.com/2011/05/13/mossy-flow/#comments Fri, 13 May 2011 13:10:52 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2334 I took the day off work on Wednesday and used my time to drive out to the mountains for a bit of a photo excursion. On the recommendation from a co-worker, I made my way to Grassi Lakes which is just around the corner from the Canmore Nordic Centre where all the cross-country skiing events were held during the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. After a short hike, I reached the two small lakes, and the colour was just amazing. Both mountain lakes shone with a rich blue/green hue…it really was beautiful. However, what I really wanted to shoot was the waterfall just slightly downstream from these lakes…so I made my way down to where I could hear running water found exactly what I was looking for. Water tumbled down a steep cliff face and cascaded around old fallen logs and mossy rocks. Jackpot.

MGM Grand Elevator Lobby http://heathofee.com/2010/05/17/mgm-grand-elevator-lobby/ http://heathofee.com/2010/05/17/mgm-grand-elevator-lobby/#comments Mon, 17 May 2010 12:37:03 +0000 http://yycofee.wordpress.com/?p=739 I’m pretty excited about some of my Vegas photos and I’ve been having a great time going through and processing them all. If any of you have stayed at the MGM Grand before I’m sure you’ve walked past this fountain area a number of times on the way back to your room after a long day of drinking on the strip. I woke up very early in the morning to get this shot before anybody else was around (well, there are always a few people around in Vegas no matter what the hour) and it was well worth it; this is probably my favorite photo from our trip. Enjoy:

Canon EOS 50D, Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5, 10mm, F 11, ISO 100, 3 Exposures

The details: 3 exposure HDR tonemapped in Photomatix, Photoshop for some masking, Lightroom for catalog, color correction, sharpening, and Noiseware to finish it off.
