Warm – heath ofee dot com http://heathofee.com Thu, 21 Jun 2012 14:24:13 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.6 Ben, Lisa & Teddy http://heathofee.com/2012/06/21/ben-lisa-teddy/ http://heathofee.com/2012/06/21/ben-lisa-teddy/#comments Thu, 21 Jun 2012 14:24:13 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=4500 People love their fur children – just ask my buddy Jesse. And I’m no exception to this rule either – I’m sure you’ve all seen a number of photos of my pug/jack russell, Dexter. So when my good friends, Ben and Lisa asked me to shoot their little family, I was more than happy.

Just a shame Teddy wouldn’t keep his tongue in his mouth for the duration of the shoot 😉

Sunset Silhouette http://heathofee.com/2011/11/07/maui-sunset-photo/ http://heathofee.com/2011/11/07/maui-sunset-photo/#comments Mon, 07 Nov 2011 14:47:23 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3717 This frosty weather we’ve been having here in Calgary has made me think about warmer climates – and how I’d like to be in one! So, I went back to my shots from Maui to try and warm myself up.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II

DUMBO Sunrise http://heathofee.com/2011/10/26/nyc-dumbo-sunrise-photo/ http://heathofee.com/2011/10/26/nyc-dumbo-sunrise-photo/#comments Wed, 26 Oct 2011 13:10:38 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3551 I must seem a little schizophrenic these days…photos from New York – Hawaii – New York – Hawaii. I just had such a great time in both places, and I love sharing how I saw both locations. Soooo…back to NYC today!

The one sunrise I caught while in New York was on the morning of the epic 18 hour photowalk with the now infamous photog crew that gathered there. We began the day in an area of Brooklyn called DUMBO which offers great views of the lower Manhattan skyline along with the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. While it would have been nice to have a few clouds in the sky, we were blessed with some wonderfully warm light as the sun started to come over the horizon. I think we call came away with some sort of composition with the light spilling onto this boardwalk with the Manhattan bridge in the background – but we all saw it slightly differently. This is my take.

Cool Water http://heathofee.com/2011/09/19/cool-water/ http://heathofee.com/2011/09/19/cool-water/#comments Mon, 19 Sep 2011 13:10:36 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3319 Last Sunday and Monday I had the pleasure of meeting and shooting with Rick Louie of Hansrico Photography. He was up in my neck of the woods from his home in Colorado on a photography trip with 8 or 9 other shooters from across North America. Sounds like they had a great time in and around the Banff area and I was happy to be able to spend an evening with them all.

The first spot Rick wanted to hit with me was a small hillside creek that created a ridiculous quantity of small waterfalls. He and the crew had stumbled upon the location earlier in the trip, and I’m glad they did as I could have spent hours shooting these little falls. Below is one of my faves from that location.

Equipment:
Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L

Ripples http://heathofee.com/2011/08/30/ripples/ http://heathofee.com/2011/08/30/ripples/#comments Tue, 30 Aug 2011 13:10:00 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3180 If any of you have used the B+W 10-stop ND filter, you’ll know that it’s actually not quite neutral in colour – it tends to have a bit of a warm cast. Most times I try to eliminate this cast in post-processing, but for some images – like the one below – it just works. The added warmth from the filter helped emphasize the tones in the sand and made those sunset colours really pop. So, when using a filter that may create a bit of a colour cast, make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons and not just because you ‘think you should’ – you may find yourself happy with the uncorrected frame.

onOne Takes On http://heathofee.com/2011/07/18/onone-takes-on/ http://heathofee.com/2011/07/18/onone-takes-on/#comments Mon, 18 Jul 2011 13:10:51 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2767 Last week I had the honour of having one of my unprocessed images be part of a new series of webinars put on by Brian Matiash of onOne Software. The series is called onOne Takes On and is all about exploring individual vision when processing images. I won’t go into great detail describing the webinar, but please take the time to watch this great webinar. The image you see below is the one I donated to the webinar, and was taken at Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park.

If you like the tools you see used in the video, make sure to check out the amazing summer savings onOne is having right now. The Perfect Photo Suite 5.5 has never been greater value!

Two for One http://heathofee.com/2011/06/27/two-for-one/ http://heathofee.com/2011/06/27/two-for-one/#comments Mon, 27 Jun 2011 13:10:59 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2607 This past weekend I was in Moyie Lake, BC for an annual boys golf trip…and I’m currently in recovery mode. An awful lot of beer was consumed and there wasn’t much sleep to be had, so my body is a little bit angry with me.

I didn’t have the chance to do any serious shooting, but I did get a few shots of the boys hanging out around the firepit. I’ll probably be sharing a few more later in the week, but for now, here’s a combination portrait/self-portrait. When my buddy Fraser put on these super reflective Ray Bans, I couldn’t help but use them (and him) to shoot a self-portrait. I guess I could have stopped down the aperture a bit so both he and I were in focus…but there was beer to be consumed 🙂

Salton Sea – Warm Shadows http://heathofee.com/2011/01/25/warm-shadows/ http://heathofee.com/2011/01/25/warm-shadows/#comments Tue, 25 Jan 2011 13:55:16 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1624 As soon as I started shooting around the Salton Sea in southern California, I knew I wanted to turn the images into some sort of series. The problem was, I had some difficulty figuring out exactly how I wanted to present the images. HDR? Black and white? I couldn’t seem to decide, and it was a bit frustrating. After a bit of playing around in PhotoTools last night, I think I found my recipe; a warm, vintage look on a single exposure really captures the mood of the place.

This is the first of the series, and it was taken near the northeast corner of the Salton Sea outside a visitors centre. I’m not exactly sure what this T-post is for, but the hard light creating the strong shadow makes for an interesting composition. Because I was shooting with a wide angle lens, I had the choice of keeping the horizon straight or the bar vertical…I chose the bar 🙂

Another Palapa Sunrise http://heathofee.com/2011/01/11/another-palapa-sunrise/ http://heathofee.com/2011/01/11/another-palapa-sunrise/#comments Tue, 11 Jan 2011 14:06:42 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1560 What better way to start off a -21 C morning than with a warm shot of a beach in Mexico! I really love going back to these shots I took in December because it brings all the great memories I have rushing back. That’s part of the magic of photography though, right? It enables us to capture a moment and hold onto it forever.

One lesson I’ve slowly been learning when out on a shoot is to always look back when walking away from a scene, because you never know what you might be missing. On this morning, I was absolutely exhausted from waking up to catch the sunrise and after the show was over, all I could think about was getting back to the cozy bed in my room for a little more shut-eye. But, I forced myself to look back at the sunrise as I was walking back…and boy am I glad I did!
