Just a shame Teddy wouldn’t keep his tongue in his mouth for the duration of the shoot

The one sunrise I caught while in New York was on the morning of the epic 18 hour photowalk with the now infamous photog crew that gathered there. We began the day in an area of Brooklyn called DUMBO which offers great views of the lower Manhattan skyline along with the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. While it would have been nice to have a few clouds in the sky, we were blessed with some wonderfully warm light as the sun started to come over the horizon. I think we call came away with some sort of composition with the light spilling onto this boardwalk with the Manhattan bridge in the background – but we all saw it slightly differently. This is my take.

The first spot Rick wanted to hit with me was a small hillside creek that created a ridiculous quantity of small waterfalls. He and the crew had stumbled upon the location earlier in the trip, and I’m glad they did as I could have spent hours shooting these little falls. Below is one of my faves from that location.

]]>I didn’t have the chance to do any serious shooting, but I did get a few shots of the boys hanging out around the firepit. I’ll probably be sharing a few more later in the week, but for now, here’s a combination portrait/self-portrait. When my buddy Fraser put on these super reflective Ray Bans, I couldn’t help but use them (and him) to shoot a self-portrait. I guess I could have stopped down the aperture a bit so both he and I were in focus…but there was beer to be consumed
]]>This is the first of the series, and it was taken near the northeast corner of the Salton Sea outside a visitors centre. I’m not exactly sure what this T-post is for, but the hard light creating the strong shadow makes for an interesting composition. Because I was shooting with a wide angle lens, I had the choice of keeping the horizon straight or the bar vertical…I chose the bar
]]>One lesson I’ve slowly been learning when out on a shoot is to always look back when walking away from a scene, because you never know what you might be missing. On this morning, I was absolutely exhausted from waking up to catch the sunrise and after the show was over, all I could think about was getting back to the cozy bed in my room for a little more shut-eye. But, I forced myself to look back at the sunrise as I was walking back…and boy am I glad I did!
