Today’s image is of the latter which is known as ‘the bluest lake in the Rockies’. The colour of the lake in the photo below is an accurate representation of what I saw when I was there – it’s just crazy blue!

It was an amazing end to an awesome day.

Black Sand http://heathofee.com/2011/10/25/black-sand-beach-photo/ http://heathofee.com/2011/10/25/black-sand-beach-photo/#comments Tue, 25 Oct 2011 13:10:32 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3616 While in Hawaii earlier this year, my wife and I drove the famous ‘Road to Hana’ – but didn’t stop and turn around upon reaching the town like most people do. We took our rental vehicle all the back around the east/south end of the island, which apparently is not recommended for rentals 🙂 The road gets a bit bumpy and sketchy for a while, but it was well worth it as we found some great spots on the way back. Unfortunately I can’t remember off the top of my head if this black sand beach was before or after Hana, but I can tell you that I was absolutely amazed by it. I’d never seen a beach like this before and finding one was high on my list for our visit, so I couldn’t have been happier when we arrived here.

Ripples http://heathofee.com/2011/08/30/ripples/ http://heathofee.com/2011/08/30/ripples/#comments Tue, 30 Aug 2011 13:10:00 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3180 If any of you have used the B+W 10-stop ND filter, you’ll know that it’s actually not quite neutral in colour – it tends to have a bit of a warm cast. Most times I try to eliminate this cast in post-processing, but for some images – like the one below – it just works. The added warmth from the filter helped emphasize the tones in the sand and made those sunset colours really pop. So, when using a filter that may create a bit of a colour cast, make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons and not just because you ‘think you should’ – you may find yourself happy with the uncorrected frame.

Roots http://heathofee.com/2011/08/24/roots/ http://heathofee.com/2011/08/24/roots/#comments Wed, 24 Aug 2011 13:10:56 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3140 Some places on this planet are just made to be photographed – and I found out that a great deal of them happen to be in Hawaii. During my time there, I was constantly amazed at the natural beauty and diversity available to capture with my camera – and the scene below is no exception. This tree couldn’t have fallen in a more beautiful spot and I felt very lucky to have stumbled upon it.

Prairie Vibrance http://heathofee.com/2011/08/22/prairie-vibrance/ http://heathofee.com/2011/08/22/prairie-vibrance/#comments Mon, 22 Aug 2011 13:10:07 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2856 In keeping with the panorama theme from Friday, I figured I’d share this shot from my home province of Alberta. Now, this isn’t a panorama in the truest sense – it’s just a wide aspect crop of a single frame. The original included much more of the fresh, black pavement and I felt it ate up too much of the frame. There’s nothing wrong with some creative cropping every now and then 🙂

Any guesses on what that yellow crop is?

Maui Sunset http://heathofee.com/2011/08/09/maui-sunset/ http://heathofee.com/2011/08/09/maui-sunset/#comments Tue, 09 Aug 2011 13:10:58 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2919 As some of you may know, I was in Maui all of last week for my best bud’s wedding. I’d never been before and couldn’t have been more excited to spend some quality time with my friends and, obviously, shoot the crap out of that little island. As it turned out, I didn’t shoot quite as much as I had expected to, but I think I have a good sampling of material from all over Maui.

Now that I’m back, I figured the best way to start off the series of images is with my parting memory of Hawaii. I hadn’t shot a sunset all week (terrible, I know) but knew I had to before I left. So, on the last night, just a few hours before I was due to catch my flight home, I set up shop along the beach outside my condo and soaked in what was one of the best sunsets I have ever seen. Hands down. Please, enjoy.

New Growth http://heathofee.com/2011/07/27/new-growth/ http://heathofee.com/2011/07/27/new-growth/#comments Wed, 27 Jul 2011 13:10:19 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2868 This is a shot from my trip to the Kootenays earlier this year. I think I mentioned the huge forest fire that took out an enormous portion of this forest in a previous post. You can see more of that devastation in this shot, but you also get a peek at the new growth that will form the base of the new forest that will continue to grow in years to come.

Cracking Up http://heathofee.com/2011/07/21/cracking-up/ http://heathofee.com/2011/07/21/cracking-up/#comments Thu, 21 Jul 2011 13:10:49 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2841 I debated over what image to post today, but in the end, this shot from the badlands in Drumheller won out. This valley in southern Alberta contains the most alien landscape in the province as far as I’m concerned. Huge cracked mounds of sedimentary rock litter the valley, showcasing the various layers of rock and clay that have been exposed through millions of years of erosion. Truly a marvel.

Swing Life Away http://heathofee.com/2011/07/20/swing-life-away/ http://heathofee.com/2011/07/20/swing-life-away/#comments Wed, 20 Jul 2011 13:10:47 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2831 Today, another shot from the midway at the Calgary Stampede. I’ve always loved these swing rides at amusement parks…there’s something about being swung around at the end of a long lead that is quite peaceful. I figured the best way to capture this sense of peace was to keep the frame simple, so I left the swings and riders as a silhouette against the large bank of cloud and sky behind them. Looking for simple frames such as this amid the hustle and bustle of a fairground was a good exercise.
