Silhouette – heath ofee dot com http://heathofee.com Tue, 24 Jan 2012 13:39:58 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.6 Joshua Sunrise http://heathofee.com/2012/01/24/joshua-sunrise/ http://heathofee.com/2012/01/24/joshua-sunrise/#comments Tue, 24 Jan 2012 14:10:14 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=4117 The best part of the one night I spent camping in Joshua Tree was when the sun started to come up and I was forced to get out my freezing cold sleeping bag and go take photos. Sub-freezing overnight temperatures ensured that I didn’t get any sleep, so the rush of finding some good sunrise compositions was a welcome bit of activity.

I’m sure that all six of us who were camping got a silhouette shot similar to this one at sunrise. There were just enough clouds on the horizon to create some interesting colour, and those Joshua Trees are just too cool to pass up as a foreground element.

Be There http://heathofee.com/2011/11/09/be-there/ http://heathofee.com/2011/11/09/be-there/#comments Wed, 09 Nov 2011 15:17:59 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3721 Yesterday I treated myself to an all day, sunrise to sunset shoot in the Rocky Mountains. I feel like I neglected the amazing scenery I live so close to again this summer, so I thought one last day in the mountains before it starts getting really cold was necessary.

I didn’t really have any set plans as to where I was going except for sunrise. I picked Quarry Lake in Canmore as my first location because it wouldn’t take me too long to get there and I’d never shot there before. I arrived well before sunrise and did a bit of scouting for locations. Once I found my spot it felt like ages until that amazing glow started to appear on the mountains – but it was worth it. I know I got some great stuff of the frozen lake and mountains – but one of the coolest shots I think I got was the one you see below. It was 100% a case of ‘F8 and Be There’. While my other body was capturing some long exposures, I had my second body in hand rattling off some single frames of the amazing colours. At one point I saw a bird out of the corner of my eye, so I wheeled, framed, and fired and managed to capture it’s silhouette against the fiery clouds. Not an epic landscape, but a frame I’m very pleased with nonetheless.

I’ll likely start showing some of the lake photos from the day I’m calling ’12 hours, 6 lakes, 3 cameras, 1 man’ (cheesy, I know ;)) next week. Stay tuned!

Sunset Silhouette http://heathofee.com/2011/11/07/maui-sunset-photo/ http://heathofee.com/2011/11/07/maui-sunset-photo/#comments Mon, 07 Nov 2011 14:47:23 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3717 This frosty weather we’ve been having here in Calgary has made me think about warmer climates – and how I’d like to be in one! So, I went back to my shots from Maui to try and warm myself up.

Maui Sunset http://heathofee.com/2011/08/09/maui-sunset/ http://heathofee.com/2011/08/09/maui-sunset/#comments Tue, 09 Aug 2011 13:10:58 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2919 As some of you may know, I was in Maui all of last week for my best bud’s wedding. I’d never been before and couldn’t have been more excited to spend some quality time with my friends and, obviously, shoot the crap out of that little island. As it turned out, I didn’t shoot quite as much as I had expected to, but I think I have a good sampling of material from all over Maui.

Now that I’m back, I figured the best way to start off the series of images is with my parting memory of Hawaii. I hadn’t shot a sunset all week (terrible, I know) but knew I had to before I left. So, on the last night, just a few hours before I was due to catch my flight home, I set up shop along the beach outside my condo and soaked in what was one of the best sunsets I have ever seen. Hands down. Please, enjoy.

Caribbean Sunrise http://heathofee.com/2010/12/21/caribbean-sunrise/ http://heathofee.com/2010/12/21/caribbean-sunrise/#comments Tue, 21 Dec 2010 13:27:04 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1430 I’m back! As most of you know, I was away in Mexico for the past two weeks getting married and celebrating my honeymoon. We had an amazing time hanging out with family and friends for the first week, and were able to enjoy some time to ourselves at a different resort for our honeymoon in the second week. As soon as we get our wedding photos back I’ll be sure to post a few of the highlights here, but in the meantime I’ll be sharing some of the shots I was able to take while away.

This first photo is actually the very first frame I took on the beach. It’s part of a bracket series that I had intended to process as an HDR, but the silhouette of those palm trees against the first morning light was just too good to pass up! I made a few adjustments in Phototools, but nothing too dramatic…this is very close to what the shot looked like in-camera.

Despite being on vacation and really wanting to make use of the time to get some quality sleep, I did manage to haul myself out of bed for 4 sunrises over the course of the two weeks. It was definitely worth it, and I should have a few more decent sunrise shots to share in the coming weeks!

Angelic Sunset http://heathofee.com/2010/11/26/angelic-sunset/ http://heathofee.com/2010/11/26/angelic-sunset/#comments Fri, 26 Nov 2010 14:26:52 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1389 I was sifting through my Italy photos last night and stumbled across this little gem from Rome that I’d forgotten about. Sometimes HDR is not necessary for an image to have impact, and I feel like this is a good example of that. HDR would have brought out all the detail in the buildings instead of letting them fall into complete silhouette.

Now, I’m not entirely sure what buildings these are in Rome. I do remember shooting this just down the street from the Coliseum, so if any of you know what we’re looking at here, feel free to drop a comment to let me know!
