I Want To Go To There http://heathofee.com/2011/03/08/i-want-to-go-to-there/ http://heathofee.com/2011/03/08/i-want-to-go-to-there/#comments Tue, 08 Mar 2011 13:48:33 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1968 I know at least two of my readers (and probably a good many more) will get the TV reference I’m making in the title of this post, and for me this quote couldn’t be more true right now. We have had an absolutely miserable February and beginning of March here in Calgary (temps around -20C for a few weeks) and I would absolutely love to be relaxing in one of those Adirondack chairs enjoying a chilled brew. But, alas, I’m stuck here in the Canadian deep freeze for at least a little while longer 🙁

This photo was taken in a very swank house in a very swank neighbourhood in Indio, California while I was there in January. My parents in law have a place down there and are good friends with the amazing folks who live in a stunning Tuscan style home right on a golf course. I had the luxury of spending an afternoon here, and in between tours of the home and relaxing, the owners graciously allowed me to take a few shots in their amazing backyard. The view is outstanding and the stonework is nothing short of amazing. I should have a few more images to share from this fantastic home in the future. I don’t know about you, but I want to go to there!

Salton Sea – Warm Shadows http://heathofee.com/2011/01/25/warm-shadows/ http://heathofee.com/2011/01/25/warm-shadows/#comments Tue, 25 Jan 2011 13:55:16 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1624 As soon as I started shooting around the Salton Sea in southern California, I knew I wanted to turn the images into some sort of series. The problem was, I had some difficulty figuring out exactly how I wanted to present the images. HDR? Black and white? I couldn’t seem to decide, and it was a bit frustrating. After a bit of playing around in PhotoTools last night, I think I found my recipe; a warm, vintage look on a single exposure really captures the mood of the place.

This is the first of the series, and it was taken near the northeast corner of the Salton Sea outside a visitors centre. I’m not exactly sure what this T-post is for, but the hard light creating the strong shadow makes for an interesting composition. Because I was shooting with a wide angle lens, I had the choice of keeping the horizon straight or the bar vertical…I chose the bar 🙂

The Longest Shadow http://heathofee.com/2010/10/14/the-longest-shadow/ http://heathofee.com/2010/10/14/the-longest-shadow/#comments Thu, 14 Oct 2010 12:43:07 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1170 It’s gotta be one of the best feelings in the world for any photographer when you take a shot, look at the LCD, and instantly know you’ve got something great. If I can can come away from a shoot with one set of brackets like that, I am a very happy camper. This doesn’t happen for me every time I go out shooting, but last week when I was at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, there was one set of brackets that I knew would work out.

The long shadows, winding pathway, autumn colours, and low sun just all magically lined up for me to take this shot. This was the last set of brackets I shot at the sanctuary that day, and I wouldn’t have gotten this shot if I hadn’t convinced myself to keep elxploring after completing a circle of half the park. Always listen to your gut. Often times it’ll give you good advice.
