I hope you all have an awesome long weekend and are able to grab some sweet deals on new gear tomorrow!

I decided to take us back to school again with this shot of a set of extremely cluttered message boards. This is in the lobby area of the Science Theatres building at the University of Calgary. I find it so funny that all these students with things to say are far too lazy to clear off any old notices to make room for theirs…they just slap their own message right on top, regardless of what they may be covering up. I guess the life of a student is a busy one!

CHC 119 http://heathofee.com/2010/11/21/chc-119/ http://heathofee.com/2010/11/21/chc-119/#comments Sun, 21 Nov 2010 17:10:05 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1347 Inspired by Jacob Lucas’ post yesterday, I decided to revisit some panorama brackets I shot very early this year at the University of Calgary. I shot a few sets of brackets in various lecture theatres with the intention of merging them into panoramas, but didn’t have too much luck with my first attempts. With the help of Jacob’s post, and the better merging capabilities in Photoshop CS5, I was able to achieve some better results.

This first image is of Cragie Hall Building C, Room 119 (CHC 119 for those who attended the U of C). I had a first year physics lecture in this classroom when I was still an engineering major…so I wouldn’t say I have extremely fond memories of this room, but I decided to photograph it nonetheless. There are a few alignment issues that can be seen when this image is viewed large (click the image to see it larger on Flickr) which I think is the result of shooting the three sets of brackets at 10mm. When shooting this wide there tends to be a bit too much distortion around the edges of the frame…consider this a lesson learned! I believe I should have another couple lecture theatre panoramas to share, so keep a look out!

Lonely Lock http://heathofee.com/2010/09/05/lonely-lock/ http://heathofee.com/2010/09/05/lonely-lock/#respond Sun, 05 Sep 2010 22:36:34 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1041 Every time I use my new 50mm f/1.4 I grow more fond of it. I know I’ve said this before, but after seeing this lens in action and seeing the amazing results of the Canon 85mm f/1.2L in my engagement photos, I’m absolutely loving the look of fast primes over zooms. Nearly every lens on my current wish list (read: will never be able to afford list) is a prime.

This shot is from a walk I took a few weeks ago in and around the Ramsay/Inglewood area in Calgary. Specifically, this bike rack belongs to Ramsay School which is one of the oldest in the city built in 1912. I thought the lone lock sitting on the rack made for an interesting subject and the shallow depth of field of the 50mm f/1.4 allowed me to really isolate it against the background. I added a bit of a graduated filter in Lightroom as well to further emphasize the subject.
