Rock – heath ofee dot com http://heathofee.com Wed, 19 Oct 2011 12:25:45 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.6 The Cliffs http://heathofee.com/2011/10/19/the-cliffs/ http://heathofee.com/2011/10/19/the-cliffs/#comments Wed, 19 Oct 2011 13:10:03 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3539 Yesterday I had a sudden urge to revisit the images I took while in Maui earlier this year. By no means have I posted all the images I’d like to from that trip, so as it continues to get colder here in Calgary I’ll likely post a few more of these shots to try to warm myself up 🙂

This shot is just down from a roadside pullout about halfway between Kihei and Lahaina. The view from the top is quite nice, but just a short journey down the hill led to some much better views of these awesome cliffs. This was a stunning spot in the middle of the day, so I’m sure it would have been than much more amazing during sunset – but I never made it back.

This is a 3 exposure panorama using the shift capabilities of the Canon 24mm tilt/shift lens. Such a great lens and such an easy way to create panoramas – one day I may add that lens to my bag permanently.

Equipment:
Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II

Relaxation http://heathofee.com/2011/08/29/relaxation/ http://heathofee.com/2011/08/29/relaxation/#comments Mon, 29 Aug 2011 13:10:52 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3171 Welcome to the new look of heathofee.com. I’ve been thinking about making the site a little simpler and cleaner for a while now, and I finally took the initiative to get it done over the last couple of days. There may be a few more minor tweaks in the coming weeks, but I’m pretty happy with how it is right now. Of course, I’m open to any comments or suggestions.

There’s something so relaxing about sitting on a secluded beach all on your own listening to the waves roll in. It’s like all your cares and worries are temporarily washed out to sea with each successive wave, leaving only peace and serenity.

Equipment:
Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L
B+W 77mm 10-stop ND Filter

Orange http://heathofee.com/2011/06/23/orange/ http://heathofee.com/2011/06/23/orange/#comments Thu, 23 Jun 2011 13:10:05 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2594 I passed this creek on the side of the TransCanada Highway at least twice on my trip to BC a couple weekends ago. I made a mental note to make sure I stopped to shoot it on my way home, and I’m very glad I did. I only fired off a few shots as the composition options were limited due to the fact that the creek was right on the side of the highway, but I’m very pleased with what I got.

Including an interesting element into the foreground of a photograph can add a great bit of punch to a shot, and is sometimes overlooked. I was lucky to spot this huge orange rock and be able to incorporate it into my frame. Next time you’re out shooting, look for something interesting to place in the foreground of your frame to add some extra interest.

Awesome Power http://heathofee.com/2011/06/09/awesome-power/ http://heathofee.com/2011/06/09/awesome-power/#comments Thu, 09 Jun 2011 13:10:02 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2491 The title for this image is twofold today. Firstly, this image shows the awesome power of the Kicking Horse River. At one point, the river flowed overtop of the rock bridge that you see in this image. Over years and years of erosion, the water eventually carved its way through the rock and formed this amazing natural rock bridge over the river.

Secondly, this image shows the awesome power of graduated filters. While I always knew grads were extremely useful for landscapes such as these, it wasn’t until I bought some of my own and started using them that I really understood how fantastic they can be. This is a single exposure using a 2-stop graduated ND filter to bring the exposure in the sky even with that of the rest of the frame. I can’t tell you how excited I was to shoot frames like this, check my histogram, and see absolutely no blinkies. Revolutionary.

Alien Abstract http://heathofee.com/2011/05/30/alien-abstract/ http://heathofee.com/2011/05/30/alien-abstract/#comments Mon, 30 May 2011 13:55:38 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2434 While driving to Invermere a couple weekends ago, I noticed a large pool of standing water in the ditch on the side of the highway. The pool was directly underneath an interesting rock formation, so I made a note to myself (and my wife) that I needed to head back to that location with my gear the next day. What you see below is the result. The pool provided a perfect reflection of the rock above, and I felt that an abstract crop worked well with the subject.

I hope all my American friends remember and enjoy the Memorial Day holiday.

Hard Light http://heathofee.com/2011/04/19/hard-light/ http://heathofee.com/2011/04/19/hard-light/#comments Tue, 19 Apr 2011 13:10:03 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2234 Since I was up late last night watching the final few episodes of Prison Break season one and didn’t have time to process a new image, we’re going back to Joshua Tree National Park today. I had thought about including this shot in my original week-long series from the park, but it just didn’t work as a square crop. So, the processing is the same as the others you’ve all seen, but I left it in its native aspect ratio.

Joshua Tree National Park – Bedraggled http://heathofee.com/2011/03/25/jtnp-bedraggled/ http://heathofee.com/2011/03/25/jtnp-bedraggled/#comments Fri, 25 Mar 2011 13:10:16 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2071 Today my mini-series of images from Joshua Tree National Park comes to an end. Thanks for all the support of these images this week!

This is probably my favourite of the week. On one of the only short hikes we took on our second day in Joshua Tree there were quite a few of these sad, bedraggled looking trees among the rocks. Despite their lack of leaves, there was a ton of character in their branches, and the blue sky provided a perfect backdrop against which to highlight them.

Joshua Tree National Park – Skull Rock http://heathofee.com/2011/03/22/jtnp-skull-rock/ http://heathofee.com/2011/03/22/jtnp-skull-rock/#comments Tue, 22 Mar 2011 13:10:41 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2061 If you’ve never been to Joshua Tree, I would highly recommend making a trip for a couple of days. There is so much to see and the landscape and rock formations are absolutely amazing. I know I’ll be heading back for some hiking when I’m back in the area because that’s one thing I didn’t get to do on my first trip.

For today’s image, I present: Skull Rock.

Moon Rock http://heathofee.com/2011/03/10/moon-rock/ http://heathofee.com/2011/03/10/moon-rock/#comments Thu, 10 Mar 2011 15:46:40 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1981 In addition to the pretty cool Joshua Trees that reside in the national park of the same name, there are also some pretty cool rock formations. The landscape felt almost alien to me. Big, round rocks jutting out of low scrubby desert is definitely something I’m not used to seeing living in Calgary. I tried to portray the alien feeling in the processing…a little cool and kind of barren feeling.
