The ease with which great black and white images can be created with Silver Efex is pretty impressive…I probably spent less than 10 minutes creating this black and white conversion. I still haven’t tried it out on any portraits, so that will be my next experiment.

Vanishing Point http://heathofee.com/2010/12/23/vanishing-point/ http://heathofee.com/2010/12/23/vanishing-point/#comments Thu, 23 Dec 2010 13:50:43 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1446 This is a spot at the Excellence Riviera Cancun that I knew I had to shoot as soon as I saw it the first day. We walked through this long outdoor corridor at least two or three times a day, commuting from our room to the restaurants, the beach, and the pool. During daytime hours, this corridor isn’t anything too special, but at night when the lights are on it’s much more compelling. This photo was taken before one of my sunrise trips to the beach, so I was able to capture it without any other pesky tourists in the shot.

Originally, this shot included much more of the tiled floor in the foreground, but I felt the composition worked a bit better with the extra tile cropped out. I threw a few of my favourite Phototools filters on the tonemapped image, and then used the Midnight filter in Nik Color Efex Pro selectively to darken a few areas. This is exactly how I remember this hallway looking that morning:

Checkmate? http://heathofee.com/2010/12/22/checkmate/ http://heathofee.com/2010/12/22/checkmate/#comments Wed, 22 Dec 2010 13:14:00 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1439 I didn’t do this on purpose, but it seems as though I’ve completely bookended my trip with the first two photos I’m posting. Yesterday’s image was the first frame I took on the beach, and today’s HDR is the third to last set of brackets I shot before leaving Mexico.

This chess set is in the lobby of the Excellence Riviera Cancun where we spent our honeymoon. As soon as I walked in on the first day and saw these large table boards with the huge carved wooden playing pieces, I knew I had to get a shot of them before I left. I also knew I would be throwing on my 50mm to get some super shallow depth of field and some nice bokeh on some of those playing pieces. I don’t usually choose to go with an angled frame, but I thought it would work nicely here, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Chateau Lake Louise Foyer http://heathofee.com/2010/09/05/chateau-lake-louise-foyer/ http://heathofee.com/2010/09/05/chateau-lake-louise-foyer/#respond Sun, 05 Sep 2010 22:19:36 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1030 I’ve said this before, but the Chateau Lake Louise is an amazing hotel in a very amazing location. This is another of the shots I took on my brief visit there earlier this year and I think it may be one of my favorites. On the left you can see the check in counter, and the main entrance is just out of frame to the right. I thought about taking a shot looking in from the entrance, but I felt that this composition with the grand staircase in the background was much better.
