Ramsay – heath ofee dot com http://heathofee.com Mon, 06 Sep 2010 15:00:40 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.6 Boys Only http://heathofee.com/2010/09/06/boys-only/ http://heathofee.com/2010/09/06/boys-only/#respond Mon, 06 Sep 2010 15:00:40 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1057 I really love how HDR processing can bring out the texture in almost any scene. That was most of the reason for me processing this shot in HDR. It was a gloomy, overcast day and there wasn’t a whole lot of dynamic range to be captured in this shot…but there was plenty of texture in the sandstone walls of Ramsay School. Calgary was once known as the ‘Sandstone City’, so there are quite a few historic sandstone buildings around the city that I have yet to photograph…I’ll have to put them all on my list!

I found it intriguing that there used to be separate boys and girls entrances to schools back in the day, so I needed to capture one of them. The red door in stark contrast with the sandstone added a bit of interest to this composition, and I’m very happy with how the texture of the sandstone came out.

Lonely Lock http://heathofee.com/2010/09/05/lonely-lock/ http://heathofee.com/2010/09/05/lonely-lock/#respond Sun, 05 Sep 2010 22:36:34 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1041 Every time I use my new 50mm f/1.4 I grow more fond of it. I know I’ve said this before, but after seeing this lens in action and seeing the amazing results of the Canon 85mm f/1.2L in my engagement photos, I’m absolutely loving the look of fast primes over zooms. Nearly every lens on my current wish list (read: will never be able to afford list) is a prime.

This shot is from a walk I took a few weeks ago in and around the Ramsay/Inglewood area in Calgary. Specifically, this bike rack belongs to Ramsay School which is one of the oldest in the city built in 1912. I thought the lone lock sitting on the rack made for an interesting subject and the shallow depth of field of the 50mm f/1.4 allowed me to really isolate it against the background. I added a bit of a graduated filter in Lightroom as well to further emphasize the subject.
