These interesting design elements are in the brand new Eighth Avenue Place building in downtown Calgary. Between each elevator bank, these rib-like structures stretch from just overhead all the way to the ceiling meters above. I’m not sure if they’re actually functional, but they do kind of look like they form the ribcage of main foyer.

Grand Canal http://heathofee.com/2011/04/08/grand-canal/ http://heathofee.com/2011/04/08/grand-canal/#comments Fri, 08 Apr 2011 13:10:27 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2168 Back to the Italy archives for today’s image.

I’m sure I’ve said this before, but Venice is by far one of the coolest cities I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting. There are so many streets and alleys to explore, and you never know what you’ll find around the next bend. If you haven’t been, you should put Venice on your must see list.

Although I still love processing HDR photographs (and probably always will), lately I’ve been finding a lot of enjoyment in processing single exposures. There are many times when the limited dynamic range of a camera can make a scene more compelling than if the full range of light were exploited. If you’re an HDR enthusiast, experiment with two versions of an image: one tonemapped from a set of brackets and one single exposure from the set. See if all that dynamic range is really necessary to convey your photographic message. It’s easy to fall into the trap of shooting brackets and processing for HDR all the time…make sure you inspect your bracket sets before tonemapping to really see if you need to expand the dynamic range.

Don’t be afraid to try new (or old) things, it’s good for you, and you may just fall in love with this wonderful hobby all over again.

Stone Tub http://heathofee.com/2011/04/07/stone-tub/ http://heathofee.com/2011/04/07/stone-tub/#comments Thu, 07 Apr 2011 13:10:14 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2160 Since you all seemed to enjoy yesterday’s shot from the amazing house in Palm Springs, I figured I’d give you another taste.

This huge stone hot tub is right around the corner from the infinity pool and is just outside the master suite patio doors. What I wouldn’t give to be relaxing in that tub with an adult beverage right now…

Primary Colours http://heathofee.com/2011/03/29/primary-colours/ http://heathofee.com/2011/03/29/primary-colours/#comments Tue, 29 Mar 2011 13:10:06 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2097 Okay, I know that red, yellow, and blue aren’t the traditional set of primary colours…but this is the title I first thought of when looking at this image. I like that among all the boring grey, white and black of the parkade, these vibrant colours exist as a nice contrast.

I’m not sure about anybody else, but I’ve been in a serious winter weather shooting funk. The boring overcast skies and constant snow has really put a damper on my motivation, and I’m finding it difficult to find any inspiration to go out when my city looks so disgusting. With any luck, April will bring some nicer weather and I’ll be out and about shortly, but in the meantime, you’ll have to put up with shots from my archive. Here’s hoping for spring!

I Want My MTV http://heathofee.com/2011/03/26/i-want-my-mtv/ http://heathofee.com/2011/03/26/i-want-my-mtv/#comments Sat, 26 Mar 2011 14:57:25 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2075 I don’t know about you guys, but for some reason I’ve always wanted to smash an old CRT television. I just looks like so much fun when they do it on TV! I didn’t get the chance to live that dream with this old RCA that I found in an abandoned diner, but someone did…and I bet they had a blast doing it.

As for the title of this post…I grew up listening to Dire Straits because my dad was a huge fan. I can remember many a road trip rocking out to those guys, and I specifically remember the long introduction to ‘Money For Nothing’ was one of my favourite parts of any of their songs. And what a riff once it got started!

We’re Watching http://heathofee.com/2011/03/14/were-watching/ http://heathofee.com/2011/03/14/were-watching/#comments Mon, 14 Mar 2011 12:37:23 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2011 Back to the abandoned warehouse in Niland, California for today’s image. When I walked into this urbex heaven, as soon as I turned and looked to my right, these are the creepy graffiti eyes I was greeted with. I felt safer for the rest of my time there knowing I had a pair of watchful eyes looking out for me 😉

Purple http://heathofee.com/2011/03/11/purple/ http://heathofee.com/2011/03/11/purple/#comments Fri, 11 Mar 2011 13:56:09 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1996 During my one evening at Bombay Beach, I unwittingly composed and shot almost the exact same scene at two different times. The first was while the sun was still up, although low in the sky and the second was after the sun had set about 30 minutes later. I didn’t realize I had duplicated the scene until I started processing the photo you see below yesterday afternoon.

While I still enjoy the first image of the scene, I absolutely LOVE this version. I opted for a cooler colour palette to accentuate the blues and purples and used FocalPoint to blur out some of the foreground to really lead the viewer to the old stanchions in the water. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do.

Look to the Sky http://heathofee.com/2011/02/24/look-to-the-sky/ http://heathofee.com/2011/02/24/look-to-the-sky/#comments Thu, 24 Feb 2011 13:58:25 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1873 Looking back at my photos from Joshua Tree National Park really makes me want to go back there. I was fighting off a pretty terrible chest cold when I was in the area last month, so I was unable to really explore and enjoy myself while shooting. While I did walk away with a fair number of good frames, I know that when I’m able to take my time in the park I’ll get some more great shots.

This is the same joshua tree from this photo seen from a different angle. When shooting a subject that can be kinda boring when shot straight on, it’s fun to experiment with different angles and framing to get a unique perspective. Getting low and close to the trunk of the tree enabled me to give the viewer the feeling that the tree was stretching it’s limbs to the sky. Next time you’re out shooting, try to find a unique angle on an everyday subject.

Repeat After Me… http://heathofee.com/2011/02/19/repeat-after-me/ http://heathofee.com/2011/02/19/repeat-after-me/#comments Sat, 19 Feb 2011 15:08:18 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1830 It’s been a while since I’ve posted something with an obscene amount of colour. This has been a conscious decision, as I know that when I first started with HDR processing, I went a little overboard with my saturation slider. However, I feel that this image is one that benefits from a large dose of colour, and I really tried to amplify the awesome pink graffiti on this old brick wall. I wanted the splash of colour to be the first thing people noticed and then let their eyes drift upwards to the spraypainted quote.

This abandoned warehouse in Niland, California was a great find. I’ve already shared a few images from this location, and I can’t wait to keep leading you all on a tour of the place 🙂 Oh…and I apologize for the unavoidable F-bombs present in this frame. Hard to avoid them sometimes in places like this.

The Lounge http://heathofee.com/2011/02/18/the-lounge/ http://heathofee.com/2011/02/18/the-lounge/#comments Fri, 18 Feb 2011 13:51:49 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1817 Last night I thought I would try something a little different. Inspired by a few people (Viveca Koh, Chris Nitz, and Doug Landreth), I decided to do some experimentation with textures and frames. The shot below is a mashup of a number of layered effects from PhotoTools, three textures at varying opacities (also from PhotoTools or PhotoFrame), and a border frame from PhotoFrame. This is a bit of an experiment, so I’d love to hear some feedback. I had a lot of fun playing around with textures and frames, so I can see myself processing photos in a similar fashion in the future.
