Long Exposure – heath ofee dot com http://heathofee.com Thu, 23 Feb 2012 13:18:55 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.6 Alberta Bound http://heathofee.com/2012/02/23/alberta-bound/ http://heathofee.com/2012/02/23/alberta-bound/#comments Thu, 23 Feb 2012 14:10:06 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=4204 This is arguably the most random smattering of images I’ve ever posted together. And I kinda like it.

I spent a good amount of time in 2011 travelling to various places around my home province of Alberta, and this is a small sampling of images from a few of my fave locations. Enjoy the randomness.

Waterton http://heathofee.com/2012/02/14/waterton/ http://heathofee.com/2012/02/14/waterton/#comments Tue, 14 Feb 2012 14:10:32 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=4185 I decided to go back through the images I shot last fall in Waterton Lakes National Park to see if I could put together a couple more posts – and I think I was successful. While most of these images probably don’t warrant an entire post to themselves, taken as a set they really show off some of the beauty to be seen in the park. I’d love to be able to get back out to this amazing spot this coming summer as the lakes are absolutely stunning.

Hellmouth http://heathofee.com/2012/02/01/hellmouth/ http://heathofee.com/2012/02/01/hellmouth/#comments Wed, 01 Feb 2012 14:10:02 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=4178 One of the great things about shooting with a group of other photographers is the sharing of knowledge and ideas. New techniques that you may not have tried before come to light and subjects you may not have photographed otherwise make their way onto your memory card.

One of the downsides of shooting with a group of other photographers is that, inevitably, you end up with some similar compositions. This is the case with my shot today. My good buddy, Mike Olbinski, posted a frame of this same location with a slightly different composition a little while ago. I absolutely love his shot, but I couldn’t just let mine sit on the hard drive – so Mike, please forgive me 🙂

As for the title – I thought the creepy, salt encrusted old pier could pass for the ferry dock where one would begin their journey across the River Styx into Hades. Setting off across that eerily calm water towards the burning sunset in the distance would certainly creep me out!

Curvature http://heathofee.com/2012/01/27/curvature/ http://heathofee.com/2012/01/27/curvature/#comments Fri, 27 Jan 2012 14:10:46 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=4144 My previous visit to the Salton Sea area yielded a ridiculous amount of images – none of which contained any clouds. I spent the better part of three days shooting in and around the salt-lake, and the entire time there wasn’t a cloud in sight – ridiculous.

Thankfully, for my second visit a couple of weeks ago, we were blessed with a day full of clouds that had potential to deliver a stunning sunset. We were not disappointed. As the sun started to dip below the low mountains, we were treated to some pretty great reds and oranges in the clouds.

This shot is of the curving shoreline of Bombay Beach.

Cracking Up http://heathofee.com/2012/01/23/cracking-up-2/ http://heathofee.com/2012/01/23/cracking-up-2/#comments Mon, 23 Jan 2012 14:10:55 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=4109 When Rick Young turned off the highway and led us down a long dirt road towards the Salton Sea that ran next to an orange orchard, I wasn’t entirely sure that the location would work out. But as it turned out, this portion of the beach had some amazing photo ops and the six of us who made it down there each came away with some keepers.

A spent a good chunk of my time on this section of shoreline shooting towards the lake, but when I spotted this cracked earth and the mountains in the background I switched things up and shot in the opposite direction. I’m glad I did because as soon as I saw this long exposure on the LCD, I knew I had my shot of the day. Thanks for dragging us down that dirt road, Rick!

Lone Sentinel http://heathofee.com/2012/01/19/lone-sentinel/ http://heathofee.com/2012/01/19/lone-sentinel/#comments Thu, 19 Jan 2012 14:10:00 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=4098 Wow. I can’t believe it’s been almost an entire month since I’ve posted anything here! I’ve been in a bit of a photographic funk for the last little while, so I didn’t feel much like shooting or spending much time on Twitter and around blogs – but I should be back in at least some capacity now.

This past weekend I had the pleasure of shooting in Joshua Tree National Park and around the Salton Sea with an awesome group of guys: Mike Olbinski, Chris DeAngelis, Rick Young, Chris Frailey, and Doug Wise. I was down in the Palm Springs area for a week of vacation and let these dudes (who are from Phoenix and the Fresno area) that I was thinking of camping one night in Joshua Tree and taking some photos, of course. These brave souls agreed to meet me, and we proceeded to freeze our butts off as temperatures dipped below freezing overnight! Despite the cold, we had a great time and I think we all came away with some shots we’re quite proud of. Make sure you stay tuned to all of our blogs for the photo goodness that is sure to come.

The first image I’ll share with you is from Bombay Beach on the Salton Sea (some of you may remember my series from this location last year). It was great to visit this unique location again – and doubly awesome to have some clouds in the sky this time!

Maui – I http://heathofee.com/2011/12/14/maui-i/ http://heathofee.com/2011/12/14/maui-i/#comments Wed, 14 Dec 2011 14:10:05 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3944 Last night I spent a bit of time going back through all of my images from my trip to Maui in August. For the most part, I’ve exhausted the ‘wow’ images that deserve their own post but I have a number of images remaining that will form the basis of a few collage posts similar to what I did with my New York City photos.

Looking back through these photos has made me realize all over again how much diversity and beauty there is on that one tiny island. It’s truly mind boggling.

Enjoy.

This was one of the most relaxing places I’ve ever been. This secluded beach was a ways past the town of Hana and I could have sat and watched the aggressive surf pound the shoreline for hours.

It was a shock when I came across this abandoned truck on my drive around the northwest tip of the island. Such a contrast to the natural beauty. Oh, and I’m pretty sure there was a feral cat or something living in there because something was growling at me the whole time I was shooting.

A typical view of the northwest coastline.

I made the early trek up to the top of the Haleakala Crater for sunrise one morning and froze my butt off. Unfortunately, I’m not particularly pleased with any of my shots of the actual sunrise, which is a shame – but I do like this shot of the observatory at the summit. One of the highest in the world.

I’ve shared an image of the black sand beach we visited along the road to Hana before, and was taken just a short walk down from the beach. Love the contrast of the black rock against lush green vegetation.

On the way down from the Haleakala Crater, I stopped at a spot called Leleiwi Lookout. What you see above are a couple of shots looking into the crater. It’s like another planet.

Our drive of the road to Hana began with a light sprinkling of rain – the only moisture we saw the entire trip. It’s hard to resist that sheen of water on pavement.

This was taken at our first stop on the road to Hana. Our guidebook said there was a great waterfall at the end of a short hike – which there was, but this little grotto seemed a better shot to me at the time.

A view of the western coastline somewhere between Lahaina and Kihei.

I’ve posted a shot from this location before, but I thought it worth another to again showcase the diversity in topography. Lush rainforest on one side of the island, dry scrubby brush on the other. Just crazy.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this first instalment. I’m hoping to have two or three more along the same vein over the next few days.

Sunset Clouds http://heathofee.com/2011/11/23/lake-minnewanka-clouds/ http://heathofee.com/2011/11/23/lake-minnewanka-clouds/#comments Wed, 23 Nov 2011 14:10:06 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3820 Sometimes you just get lucky.

The clouds during the sunset over Lake Minnewanka were just amazing – and sometimes you have to allow those clouds to be the main subject of your frame.

Lake #6 http://heathofee.com/2011/11/18/lake-minnewanka-photo/ http://heathofee.com/2011/11/18/lake-minnewanka-photo/#comments Fri, 18 Nov 2011 14:10:21 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3758 Lake Minnewanka. Probably my favourite lake in the Rockies.

I’ve shot here a few times in the last year and I just can’t get enough of it. Since long exposures were the name of the game for me last Tuesday, I kept the 10-stop ND on my lens during my time at Minnewanka – and I’m glad I did. The movement in those colourful clouds and the silky smooth water make this image for me. Have a great weekend!

P.S. Don’t worry, #FilmFriday will be back soon – I just don’t have enough analog material at the moment!

Lake #4 http://heathofee.com/2011/11/17/peyto-lake-photograph/ http://heathofee.com/2011/11/17/peyto-lake-photograph/#comments Thu, 17 Nov 2011 14:10:33 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3749 After visiting Lake Louise, I made a short trek up the Icefields Parkway to both Bow Lake and Peyto Lake. Today’s image is of the latter which is known as ‘the bluest lake in the Rockies’. The colour of the lake in the photo below is an accurate representation of what I saw when I was there – it’s just crazy blue!
