Let me tell you, the 2km hike to get to Wapta Falls is well worth it. This huge waterfall is very impressive to see, and my photo definitely does not do it justice. The sound is extraordinary and the sheer volume of water flowing over the falls every second is truly something to behold. Unfortunately, without some sort of small boat or the will to get wet and cold, there isn’t an easy way to get a shot of the falls from the bottom. So I had to make do with the few compositions I could find, and this is my favourite.

Minnewanka

One of the stops the Chris’s and I made on the way back to Golden from Banff was at Lake Minnewanka. I vaguely remembered being brought to this amazing mountain lake when I was a child, but had no recollection of how stunning it was. We arrived a couple hours before sunset, and the light was pretty fantastic…especially on the mountainside featured in the image below.

I will be going back to Lake Minnewanka later this summer. For sure. The beauty is amazing, and we really only spent time on a very small portion of the shoreline…there’s so much left to explore, and I can’t wait.

Awesome Power

The title for this image is twofold today. Firstly, this image shows the awesome power of the Kicking Horse River. At one point, the river flowed overtop of the rock bridge that you see in this image. Over years and years of erosion, the water eventually carved its way through the rock and formed this amazing natural rock bridge over the river.

Secondly, this image shows the awesome power of graduated filters. While I always knew grads were extremely useful for landscapes such as these, it wasn’t until I bought some of my own and started using them that I really understood how fantastic they can be. This is a single exposure using a 2-stop graduated ND filter to bring the exposure in the sky even with that of the rest of the frame. I can’t tell you how excited I was to shoot frames like this, check my histogram, and see absolutely no blinkies. Revolutionary.
