This is arguably the most random smattering of images I’ve ever posted together. And I kinda like it.

I spent a good amount of time in 2011 travelling to various places around my home province of Alberta, and this is a small sampling of images from a few of my fave locations. Enjoy the randomness.

Waterton

I decided to go back through the images I shot last fall in Waterton Lakes National Park to see if I could put together a couple more posts – and I think I was successful. While most of these images probably don’t warrant an entire post to themselves, taken as a set they really show off some of the beauty to be seen in the park. I’d love to be able to get back out to this amazing spot this coming summer as the lakes are absolutely stunning.

Sunset Clouds

Sometimes you just get lucky.

The clouds during the sunset over Lake Minnewanka were just amazing – and sometimes you have to allow those clouds to be the main subject of your frame.

Lake #2

The second lake I hit on my mountain journey last week was Lake Louise – one of the most well known lakes in Banff National Park. I can almost guarantee you that it’s been shot by every photographer that comes to Banff, but I still can’t get enough of it. It’s just so picturesque and it looks a little bit different every time I visit. Last week the distant peaks were shrouded in circling cloud – something I’d never seen before, so I was happy to be able to capture it.

As my day in the mountains was ending on Tuesday, I was treated with a pretty amazing moonrise over Lake Minnewanka. It was an amazing end to an awesome day.

Lake Cameron

Last night I did my first bit of experimentation with luminosity masks which I’d heard of before but really had no idea what they were. Turns out, they’re a fantastic tool to help manually blend together multiple exposures for landscape photography. I didn’t do too much experimentation – just made a basic mask and applied it to two exposures to yield the result you see below…pretty sweet. If you’re looking to give it a try, this is the tutorial I used: Luminosity Masks. It was very easy to follow.

This shot is from Cameron Lake in Waterton Lakes National Park. Watching the sun rise over the mountains behind and left of the frame to illuminate the slopes on the far side of the lake was amazing. Nothing beats that golden light

Lake Cameron Sunrise

On my second day in Waterton Lakes National Park, I woke up early and drove to Cameron Lake (~16 km from the town of Waterton) to catch the sunrise. I got there just as light was starting to break, but the real show didn’t start until a hour after I arrived. Due to the fact that the mountains are so close to the lake, the sun didn’t light up the far slopes until well after it had started to rise. I’m glad I waited around for the light because watching that warmth hit the mountains you see in this image was well worth it.

Lakeside

While I was in Waterton National Park last week, I experienced two very different days. When I arrived on Tuesday morning, the entire area was socked in with low cloud and it looked as though it could rain at any moment. I was a little disappointed, but as it turned out those low clouds around the mountains made for some very dramatic images – like the one you see below of Upper Waterton Lake.

The next morning I awoke before sunrise to completely cloudless skies – quite the dramatic transformation in weather overnight. Next week I’ll share a couple images from the second day of my trip so you can see the difference.
