Jamieson Place – heath ofee dot com http://heathofee.com Tue, 15 Feb 2011 13:53:57 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.6 Jamieson Stairs http://heathofee.com/2011/02/15/jamieson-stairs/ http://heathofee.com/2011/02/15/jamieson-stairs/#comments Tue, 15 Feb 2011 13:53:57 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1787 Last night I decided to back through the shots I took during my brief time with the Canon 17mm tilt/shift lens. Most of the good shots I’ve already shared, but I did come across this shot of a stairway in the Jamieson Place building that I hadn’t shared yet. I really think the lens tilt in this shot helps guide your eye from the top of the stairs all the way to the bottom.

Urban Reststop http://heathofee.com/2010/10/27/urban-reststop/ http://heathofee.com/2010/10/27/urban-reststop/#comments Wed, 27 Oct 2010 12:43:54 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1207 This is another shot of the interior of the Jamieson Place building here in Calgary. The ‘Winter Garden’ they have set up on the third floor of the building (+15 level for those Calgarians out there) is really quite serene. There are little oases like this one set up all around the garden providing places to sit and eat or just relax for a few minutes. I probably didn’t really need to tilt the lens for this shot, but I like how the narrow plane of focus moves your through the frame to the Chihuly sculpture hanging just beyond the foliage.

Funky Glass http://heathofee.com/2010/10/18/funky-glass/ http://heathofee.com/2010/10/18/funky-glass/#comments Mon, 18 Oct 2010 13:07:02 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1180 This weekend was my very first experience shooting with a tilt/shift lens. I rented the Canon TS-E 17mm f/4.0L from Lens Rentals Canada for the week, and I couldn’t be more excited about test-driving this piece of glass.

I managed to get out for a few brackets on Friday night, but the first real experimentation with the lens came on Saturday when I had the opportunity to photograph the interior of the new Jamieson Place building. Since I seem to be having issues with security in downtown Calgary, I decided to request permission to shoot from the Jamieson Place property management. They were prompt in responding and gave me free reign to shoot the interior…woohoo! I probably spent just over an hour in the building shooting from all different angles while testing out the tilt/shift capabilities of the lens. I had a ton of fun, and I can’t wait to get out and continue my testing this week.

On the 2nd floor of the Jamieson Place building they’ve built what they’re calling a ‘Winter Garden’, and it’s pretty amazing. Modern couches and stone benches are arranged amongst groves of bamboo and other smaller plants. The main feature is an infinity pool crowned with 3 amazing Chihuly glass sculptures that hang above. It’s a very peaceful atmosphere, and I can see myself returning there on a regular basis.

Below is my first attempt at using the tilt functionality to isolate a subject. By no means perfect, but I still think it’s a fun picture.

Jamieson Place – Downtown Calgary http://heathofee.com/2010/02/21/jamieson-place-downtown-calgary/ http://heathofee.com/2010/02/21/jamieson-place-downtown-calgary/#comments Sun, 21 Feb 2010 15:37:50 +0000 http://yycofee.wordpress.com/?p=603 This weekend I’ve been on call for work which means I have to come into the office for a few hours each day. Since I was already going to be downtown I figured I might as well pack along my camera gear and go out for a morning photowalk each day to practice my HDR photography. Yesterday I got out for just over an hour before I had to head back to the office to finish up, but managed to walk from my office (the Suncor Energy Centre) to Prince’s Island Park and back taking photos all along the way. My travels took me past the new Jamieson Place building which is still under construction. The hanging sculptures just outside the entrance and in the lobby are pretty amazing so I stopped to take a few shots. I processed a few of the images from my walk last night and this one of Jamieson Place was one of my favorites.

This is a 3 shot HDR (-2, 0, +2) processed in Photomatix with some small adjustments in Lightroom.

Canon EOS 50D, Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5, 13mm, F 11, ISO 100, 3 Exposures

Let me know what you think of the processing…it might be a bit heavy but I think I like the effect. Also, this photo has a bit too much noise for my liking but the noise reduction algorithms in Lightroom don’t seem to be very powerful. Does anyone know if Photoshop is better for this?? Or should I just suck it up and get myself a copy of NoiseWare??
