I’d forgotten how beautiful that area was and of course it helped that we had some gorgeous light.

Oh, and Lily is pretty cute, too 😉

Black Sand http://heathofee.com/2011/10/25/black-sand-beach-photo/ http://heathofee.com/2011/10/25/black-sand-beach-photo/#comments Tue, 25 Oct 2011 13:10:32 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3616 While in Hawaii earlier this year, my wife and I drove the famous ‘Road to Hana’ – but didn’t stop and turn around upon reaching the town like most people do. We took our rental vehicle all the back around the east/south end of the island, which apparently is not recommended for rentals 🙂 The road gets a bit bumpy and sketchy for a while, but it was well worth it as we found some great spots on the way back. Unfortunately I can’t remember off the top of my head if this black sand beach was before or after Hana, but I can tell you that I was absolutely amazed by it. I’d never seen a beach like this before and finding one was high on my list for our visit, so I couldn’t have been happier when we arrived here.

Cool Water http://heathofee.com/2011/09/19/cool-water/ http://heathofee.com/2011/09/19/cool-water/#comments Mon, 19 Sep 2011 13:10:36 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3319 Last Sunday and Monday I had the pleasure of meeting and shooting with Rick Louie of Hansrico Photography. He was up in my neck of the woods from his home in Colorado on a photography trip with 8 or 9 other shooters from across North America. Sounds like they had a great time in and around the Banff area and I was happy to be able to spend an evening with them all.

The first spot Rick wanted to hit with me was a small hillside creek that created a ridiculous quantity of small waterfalls. He and the crew had stumbled upon the location earlier in the trip, and I’m glad they did as I could have spent hours shooting these little falls. Below is one of my faves from that location.

Life http://heathofee.com/2011/08/25/life/ http://heathofee.com/2011/08/25/life/#comments Thu, 25 Aug 2011 13:10:24 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3149 The rainforest is pretty amazing. So much diversity of life in such close quarters. Although this photo was taken just steps from the road to Hana, I felt completely immersed in forest when taking this shot.

Life is all around us – enjoy it and capture it.

Roots http://heathofee.com/2011/08/24/roots/ http://heathofee.com/2011/08/24/roots/#comments Wed, 24 Aug 2011 13:10:56 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3140 Some places on this planet are just made to be photographed – and I found out that a great deal of them happen to be in Hawaii. During my time there, I was constantly amazed at the natural beauty and diversity available to capture with my camera – and the scene below is no exception. This tree couldn’t have fallen in a more beautiful spot and I felt very lucky to have stumbled upon it.

Coastline http://heathofee.com/2011/08/18/coastline/ http://heathofee.com/2011/08/18/coastline/#comments Thu, 18 Aug 2011 13:10:21 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3083 Prior to going to Maui, my wife bought me a helicopter tour of the island for my birthday. Probably one of the coolest gifts I’ve ever been given.

I’ll tell you one thing: it’s much harder to shoot out of a cramped helicopter than you would think. Not only were quarters close, but the curved windows had so many planes of reflection it was hard to cut them all out all the time. I did my best and came away with a few shots I’m happy with…all while experiencing Maui one of the best ways possible: from the air.

Lead the Way http://heathofee.com/2011/06/08/lead-the-way/ http://heathofee.com/2011/06/08/lead-the-way/#comments Wed, 08 Jun 2011 13:10:01 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2485 One of the stops I made on the way home from Golden, BC this past weekend was at Wapta Falls. From the parking area, it’s about a 3km hike to get to the very impressive falls, and on the way back to my car I decided to slap on the 50mm, set it to f/1.4 and see what I could come up with. I had a great time experimenting with how to make the shallow depth of field work in that environment, and I came away with a few shots that I’m happy with. It can be very rewarding to limit yourself to a single lens or focal length while on a shoot. It forces you to think a bit differently and get out of your comfort zone.

Ribcage http://heathofee.com/2011/05/09/ribcage/ http://heathofee.com/2011/05/09/ribcage/#comments Mon, 09 May 2011 13:10:26 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2316 Another simple architectural composition today.

These interesting design elements are in the brand new Eighth Avenue Place building in downtown Calgary. Between each elevator bank, these rib-like structures stretch from just overhead all the way to the ceiling meters above. I’m not sure if they’re actually functional, but they do kind of look like they form the ribcage of main foyer.

Moss http://heathofee.com/2011/04/12/moss/ http://heathofee.com/2011/04/12/moss/#comments Tue, 12 Apr 2011 13:10:01 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2190 I don’t shoot these kind of details very often…mostly because I don’t have a lens with macro capabilities, but it’s fun to give it a try every now and then. I find having a lens with a very wide aperture helps out with shots like these as the selective focus and razor thin depth of field can add some drama and interest to an otherwise simple scene.
