Fujifilm X100 – heath ofee dot com http://heathofee.com Tue, 17 May 2011 12:16:25 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.6 Spring http://heathofee.com/2011/05/17/spring/ http://heathofee.com/2011/05/17/spring/#comments Tue, 17 May 2011 13:10:49 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2359 It’s slowly looking more and more like spring here in Calgary; the grass is starting to green up, and buds are beginning to appear on the trees. After such a long, cold, and snowy winter, it’s extremely relieving to see the weather finally starting to change. In the spirit of spring, I’ve decided to post a floral macro today. This was shot with my X100 in ‘macro mode’ which effectively decreases the minimum focus distance to enable close up shots. While it’s definitely not as impressive as a specialized macro lens, it’s not too bad for a small handheld.

Elton http://heathofee.com/2011/05/16/elton/ http://heathofee.com/2011/05/16/elton/#comments Mon, 16 May 2011 13:10:27 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2355 I saw Elton John perform on Saturday night. What an amazing show. He played for a solid 2.5 hours and made the rounds through all his old hits…exactly what we were all there to hear. He is a true performer, and both he and his band are absolutely stellar musicians. It was great to see a legend like Elton play live.

I didn’t take my DSLR to the show with me, but I did stick my X100 in my pocket. Obviously, the little camera didn’t afford me any great closeup shots of Elton or his band, but it did allow me to experiment with the settings necessary for concert photography (something I’ve never done before). So, while there’s nothing terribly special about my shot today, what was important was the learning experience.

Ribcage http://heathofee.com/2011/05/09/ribcage/ http://heathofee.com/2011/05/09/ribcage/#comments Mon, 09 May 2011 13:10:26 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2316 Another simple architectural composition today.

These interesting design elements are in the brand new Eighth Avenue Place building in downtown Calgary. Between each elevator bank, these rib-like structures stretch from just overhead all the way to the ceiling meters above. I’m not sure if they’re actually functional, but they do kind of look like they form the ribcage of main foyer.

X http://heathofee.com/2011/05/06/x/ http://heathofee.com/2011/05/06/x/#comments Fri, 06 May 2011 13:10:06 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2309 I’ll tell you what…I’m absolutely loving the fact that I have this little camera with me all the time now. It makes the walk to and from work every day that much more enjoyable, even if I only rattle of a few dozen frames. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve been walking back to my car and seen something photo worthy and been unable to capture it because I didn’t have my gear with me.

The fixed 35mm focal length (35mm equivalent) is really challenging me to find compositions that will work, and I think in the long run it will help with my vision as a photographer. Taking a page out of my friend, Brian Matiash’s book, I’ve been trying to simplify things every now and then, and so far this camera has helped me towards that goal.

Shadow Play http://heathofee.com/2011/05/05/shadow-play/ http://heathofee.com/2011/05/05/shadow-play/#comments Thu, 05 May 2011 13:10:00 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2304 I processed this shot last night around 7pm while trying desperately to keep my eyes open. The ridiculous sickness that I’ve had for the past week and a half has absolutely kicked my butt, and until yesterday, I hadn’t had the time or energy to shoot, process, or post any new photos. So I apologize for my absence.

I toted the new X100 with me to work, and snapped a few frames on the walk back to my car yesterday afternoon. This is my favourite of the small set. Gotta love some abstract reflections 🙂

Linked Up http://heathofee.com/2011/04/30/linked-up/ http://heathofee.com/2011/04/30/linked-up/#comments Sat, 30 Apr 2011 14:25:40 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2293 So…I bought a new toy. A Fujifilm X100

I placed my preorder with my local camera store a few months ago, and due to the tragic earthquake and tsunami in Japan, my camera didn’t arrive here in Calgary until yesterday afternoon (about a month after it was expected). Thankfully, none of the workers in the Fujifilm factory that was affected by the tsunami were hurt or killed.

I brought up the idea of purchasing this camera with a handful of my twitter pals…and for the most part, they were skeptical of how much use I’d get out of a pricey compact with a fixed 35mm lens. I completely understood their concern, but I really had my heart set on this camera. I’ve always wanted something small that I can carry around with me everywhere without the need to lug around a bag full of gear, and the X100 seemed to fit the bill perfectly (plus, it looks fantastic!). I guess time will tell how much use I end up getting out of it.

I’ve been nursing a serious head cold for the past few days, and yesterday was probably the worst day so far…as a result, I didn’t spend too much time outside testing my new toy. I did get a few shots from the 10 minute walk around my neighbourhood…the first of which is below.

As always, I used onOne PhotoTools (part of the onOne Perfect Photo Suite) to process this photo. If you’ve never used this amazing Photoshop plugin, I’d highly recommend it…almost every shot that hits this blog is touched by at least one onOne Software product. If you’re in the market for something like this, make sure you check out the ridiculous sale they’re having right now. The entire Perfect Photo Suite 5.5 is on sale for $349.95 from May 1 through May 15…that’s a savings of $150! You can’t go wrong.
