Contrast – heath ofee dot com http://heathofee.com Wed, 23 Nov 2011 13:47:09 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.6 Sunset Clouds http://heathofee.com/2011/11/23/lake-minnewanka-clouds/ http://heathofee.com/2011/11/23/lake-minnewanka-clouds/#comments Wed, 23 Nov 2011 14:10:06 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3820 Sometimes you just get lucky.

The clouds during the sunset over Lake Minnewanka were just amazing – and sometimes you have to allow those clouds to be the main subject of your frame.

Prairie Vibrance http://heathofee.com/2011/08/22/prairie-vibrance/ http://heathofee.com/2011/08/22/prairie-vibrance/#comments Mon, 22 Aug 2011 13:10:07 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2856 In keeping with the panorama theme from Friday, I figured I’d share this shot from my home province of Alberta. Now, this isn’t a panorama in the truest sense – it’s just a wide aspect crop of a single frame. The original included much more of the fresh, black pavement and I felt it ate up too much of the frame. There’s nothing wrong with some creative cropping every now and then 🙂

Any guesses on what that yellow crop is?

Panoramic http://heathofee.com/2011/02/25/panoramic/ http://heathofee.com/2011/02/25/panoramic/#comments Fri, 25 Feb 2011 13:52:38 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1884 Okay, so this image isn’t a true panorama, it’s just cropped that way…sorry to get your hopes up. The image title actually comes from one of the songs on the Book of Eli soundtrack which I was listening to while editing this shot. It’s an epic soundtrack and I find myself listening to it at least a couple times a week while editing photos. Oh, and make sure you check out Mike Olbinski’s movie title Wednesday photo from this week inspired by the very same movie.

So, after seeing all the hullabaloo on Twitter today about the release of Nik Silver Efex Pro 2, I decided I should probably give it the old college try. I downloaded the 15-day trial last night, and produced the image you see below. I was very happy with how the software worked and I can definitely see myself shelling out some cash once my trial version has expired.

Bricks of Sand and Glass http://heathofee.com/2010/10/12/bricks-of-sand-and-glass/ http://heathofee.com/2010/10/12/bricks-of-sand-and-glass/#comments Tue, 12 Oct 2010 12:52:40 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1161 I spent a good deal of time this past weekend snooping around an old alley in downtown Calgary trying to get some good grungy/texture rich brackets. The alley is full of old sandstone and brick, some of which still shows the faded paint signs of businesses past. It was a great place to shoot, and while I think I got some good shots, I will have to re-visit the same area during the twilight hours to add a bit more drama to the location.

I was immediately drawn to the large glass brick windows of this old sandstone building. The contrast of the blues and greens of the glass against the yellows of the sandstone made for a really cool scene. After tonemapping these brackets, I added an extra contrast and brilliance layers in Nik Color Efex Pro to bring out the texture in the sandstone and the colour in the glass bricks.
