The Santiago Calatrava designed pedestrian bridge has been a number of years in the making, and its construction was wrought with controversy over missed timelines and budget issues. The city still seems split; some love it while others feel it was a great big waste of money (~25 million). Me? I think its gonna make for some great photographs, and below is the first of what I’m sure will be many studies of this interesting new icon.

The Foxes: Canmore Family Photographer http://heathofee.com/2012/03/21/canmore-family-photographer/ http://heathofee.com/2012/03/21/canmore-family-photographer/#comments Wed, 21 Mar 2012 13:10:26 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=4244 A couple of weekends ago I had the pleasure of shooting a family session for a couple of old friends who live in Canmore. To say I was excited to shoot in the mountains would be an understatement – and we couldn’t have asked for a better day. The morning was mild and the sun was shining – perfection.

They’ve got to be the most fun-loving couple I’ve ever worked with, and the way they attack life and love is truly inspiring. The time we spent making these photographs over the weekend felt more like hanging out with old friends than photographing new acquaintances – and that makes me smile.

Oh, and their three dogs are pretty cool, too 🙂

The Scotts: Calgary Family Photographer http://heathofee.com/2011/12/01/calgary-family-photographer-3/ http://heathofee.com/2011/12/01/calgary-family-photographer-3/#comments Thu, 01 Dec 2011 14:10:58 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3855 I’ve known this amazing family since my days slinging coffee at Starbucks. Steph and Doug used to come in a few times a week and they were hands down among my favourite customers. I’m thankful that we’ve been able to keep in touch since my career as a barista ended, and I couldn’t have been happier to shoot them and their awesome kids a few weeks ago.

What a great afternoon we had 🙂

Be There http://heathofee.com/2011/11/09/be-there/ http://heathofee.com/2011/11/09/be-there/#comments Wed, 09 Nov 2011 15:17:59 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3721 Yesterday I treated myself to an all day, sunrise to sunset shoot in the Rocky Mountains. I feel like I neglected the amazing scenery I live so close to again this summer, so I thought one last day in the mountains before it starts getting really cold was necessary.

I didn’t really have any set plans as to where I was going except for sunrise. I picked Quarry Lake in Canmore as my first location because it wouldn’t take me too long to get there and I’d never shot there before. I arrived well before sunrise and did a bit of scouting for locations. Once I found my spot it felt like ages until that amazing glow started to appear on the mountains – but it was worth it. I know I got some great stuff of the frozen lake and mountains – but one of the coolest shots I think I got was the one you see below. It was 100% a case of ‘F8 and Be There’. While my other body was capturing some long exposures, I had my second body in hand rattling off some single frames of the amazing colours. At one point I saw a bird out of the corner of my eye, so I wheeled, framed, and fired and managed to capture it’s silhouette against the fiery clouds. Not an epic landscape, but a frame I’m very pleased with nonetheless.

I’ll likely start showing some of the lake photos from the day I’m calling ’12 hours, 6 lakes, 3 cameras, 1 man’ (cheesy, I know ;)) next week. Stay tuned!

– Canon EOS 50D

Gasoline Alley – L-29 Cord http://heathofee.com/2011/09/12/gasoline-alley-l-29-cord/ http://heathofee.com/2011/09/12/gasoline-alley-l-29-cord/#comments Mon, 12 Sep 2011 13:10:33 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3268 While our visitors from New Zealand were here last weekend, one of the spots we hit here in Calgary was Heritage Park. Going to Heritage Park is like taking a step back in time and it shows how some of the earliest Calgarians lived and worked. Probably the coolest part of the entire park is Gasoline Alley where a very large number of old vehicles are on display. I’m not a vintage car buff by any means, but I can definitely appreciate the beauty in these old cars. This week I’ll showcase a few detail shots of these vehicles here on the blog.

The car below is an L-29 Cord and was probably my favourite in the entire place. Such beauty and elegance – they just don’t make ’em like they used to 😉

Canon EOS 5D Mark II

Garage Door http://heathofee.com/2011/08/26/garage-door/ http://heathofee.com/2011/08/26/garage-door/#comments Fri, 26 Aug 2011 13:10:43 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3157 These weeks just keep blowing by – I can’t believe we’re back at #FilmFriday again. Since last week, I’ve been doing a bit of experimentation with my new (to me) Canon Elan 7…mostly with my 50 1.4 lens. The results have been hit and miss so far, but it just means I need to do a bit more testing and experimentation with different settings and film. I have a few keepers from a brief walk in downtown Calgary – one of which you see below.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Equipment:
– Canon Elan 7
Canon 50mm f/1.4

Leaky http://heathofee.com/2011/07/29/leaky/ http://heathofee.com/2011/07/29/leaky/#comments Fri, 29 Jul 2011 13:10:20 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2899 Since I got my Holga 135, I’ve been waiting to see some of those famous Holga light leaks appear on a frame. A couple of weeks ago I got what I asked for…a nice red/orange streak through a part of the frame.

Imperfection. I love it. #FilmFriday

New Growth http://heathofee.com/2011/07/27/new-growth/ http://heathofee.com/2011/07/27/new-growth/#comments Wed, 27 Jul 2011 13:10:19 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2868 This is a shot from my trip to the Kootenays earlier this year. I think I mentioned the huge forest fire that took out an enormous portion of this forest in a previous post. You can see more of that devastation in this shot, but you also get a peek at the new growth that will form the base of the new forest that will continue to grow in years to come.
