Building – heath ofee dot com http://heathofee.com Tue, 27 Mar 2012 12:34:58 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.6 Into the Mist http://heathofee.com/2012/03/27/into-the-mist/ http://heathofee.com/2012/03/27/into-the-mist/#comments Tue, 27 Mar 2012 13:10:47 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=4296 Ever since I was a kid I’ve loved the fog. Something about how it makes the world feel smaller and seems to make everything just a little more quiet. We were treated with a good dose of fog a couple of days ago and I just happened to be downtown with my camera. Lucky me 🙂

Palliser Detail http://heathofee.com/2011/07/11/palliser-detail/ http://heathofee.com/2011/07/11/palliser-detail/#comments Mon, 11 Jul 2011 13:10:21 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2720 I’ve shared photos of this building from a number of different angles, but I’ve never really showcased it as an abstract. The lines created by the window framing always catch my eye, and the colour of the glass is fantastic.

Monolith http://heathofee.com/2011/07/07/monolith/ http://heathofee.com/2011/07/07/monolith/#comments Thu, 07 Jul 2011 13:10:20 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2704 I think this is my favourite building in Calgary. It’s called Palliser South, and sits just south and east of the iconic Calgary Tower. It’s definitely not the tallest building in the city, nor does it have the most grand foyer, but there’s something about the lines of the exterior that just sucks me in. I find myself staring up at it every time I pass by…which is twice a day since I park just across the street from it. Shooting it from any angle just makes me happy.

I’ve posted much more complex compositions of this building in the past, but today I thought I’d go with something simple.

Shadow Play http://heathofee.com/2011/05/05/shadow-play/ http://heathofee.com/2011/05/05/shadow-play/#comments Thu, 05 May 2011 13:10:00 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2304 I processed this shot last night around 7pm while trying desperately to keep my eyes open. The ridiculous sickness that I’ve had for the past week and a half has absolutely kicked my butt, and until yesterday, I hadn’t had the time or energy to shoot, process, or post any new photos. So I apologize for my absence.

I toted the new X100 with me to work, and snapped a few frames on the walk back to my car yesterday afternoon. This is my favourite of the small set. Gotta love some abstract reflections 🙂

Salton Sea – Cafe http://heathofee.com/2011/03/03/salton-sea-cafe/ http://heathofee.com/2011/03/03/salton-sea-cafe/#comments Thu, 03 Mar 2011 13:20:56 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1927 Well, I think this series is finally coming to a close. I should be able to squeak out one more image for tomorrow to finish things up on a Friday, but from here on out you probably won’t see any more from the Salton Sea area processed in the same fashion as what you’ve seen this week. I have quite a few sets of brackets from the area that I want to process as HDR and stylize a bit differently than this series.

One thing I learned during my trip to this area is that you never know what location will provide you with amazing photographic opportunities. I spent a good amount of time looking through photos of the Salton Sea on Flickr before I left, and the one place I was most excited about visiting was Bombay Beach. While I did get some great shots there, I found quite a few other unexpected locations that yielded some pretty amazing photographs. So make sure you don’t have blinders on when visiting a new location. Keep your eyes open because you never know what hidden gems can be found if you just take your time.

Stairway to… http://heathofee.com/2010/11/19/stairway-to/ http://heathofee.com/2010/11/19/stairway-to/#comments Fri, 19 Nov 2010 14:25:28 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1328 After finally finishing the last of my Lightroom data transfer to my iMac last night, I decided to sift through some of my old brackets from early this year to see if there was anything I missed or wanted to reprocess. As it turns out, there are probably a whole lot of images that could use some TLC! My HDR processing skills have increased quite a bit since earlier this year, and it was a bit painful looking at some of the images I had created.

This particular shot was a bit of a white balance nightmare. The natural light coming from the doorway behind the camera and the window at the top of the frame was at odds with the warm incandescent light coming from the light fixtures. I was able to deal with this by masking two copies of the same image together with different white balance values. Now that I know how to fix this problem, I will probably process some more shots from this cool old apartment building in Calgary!

Telephone Building http://heathofee.com/2010/10/16/telephone-building/ http://heathofee.com/2010/10/16/telephone-building/#comments Sat, 16 Oct 2010 23:11:11 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1172 This building is right across the street from my office downtown, and I see it every day when I walk back to my car. For most of the summer I had been telling myself that it would make for a pretty decent photo, so I’m glad I was able to get this shot when I was out last week.

I’m finding myself very quickly becoming a fan of Nik Color Efex Pro, and I’m about to shut everything down and install a trial version of OnOne PhotoTools and give that a try. All these photographic tools at our fingertips…we are very lucky to be living in these times! Oh, and I have a Canon TS-E 17mm lens in my possession for the next 7 days, so with any luck my next few blog entries will contain photos taken with that amazing piece of glass!

St. Mark’s Square by Night http://heathofee.com/2010/09/28/st-marks-square-by-night/ http://heathofee.com/2010/09/28/st-marks-square-by-night/#respond Tue, 28 Sep 2010 16:07:49 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1093 When I first stumbled upon HDR early this year, I didn’t jump straight on the Photomatix train, I actually tried out a Lightroom plugin called Enblend/Enfuse. I spent quite a bit of time going through some of my old RAW files, splitting them into 3 pseudo-brackets and running them through this plugin. Some of the results I achieved were actually quite good considering I was working with single RAW files. I rarely use this plugin anymore as Photomatix is my go-to HDR creation/tonemapping software, but today I’m going to share one of the images I processed using this plugin.

This is a shot from the brief time I spent in Venice during my visit to Italy last year. I was in absolute wonderment the entire time I was there…I couldn’t even believe a city like Venice could exist and there were unbelievable photo opportunities around every corner and along every tiny, cobbled street. Getting lost in Venice was probably the most fun I had on my Italy trip. Weaving through the shaded streets and then stumbling out into one of the countless squares was a joy. I’d love to go back one day.

Everybody Out! http://heathofee.com/2010/09/05/everybody-out/ http://heathofee.com/2010/09/05/everybody-out/#comments Sun, 05 Sep 2010 21:58:53 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1011 I can just picture this fire alarm going off years ago…a sharp clang-clang-clang mixing with the wail of sirens on the way from the nearby #1 fire station in downtown Calgary. This fire alarm is on the outside of the old Simmons building in what is now part of the new East Village development in Calgary. It is currently the home of the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation and it’s a super cool old brick building…I’d love to be able to get inside at some point and see what (if anything) is left from the original design. Anywho…this is my first HDR attempt with my brand new Canon 50mm f/1.4 and I think it turned out pretty well. To get this shot I was straddling my tripod on the ground craning my neck upwards to try and get the framing right on this somewhat strange view of the fire alarm. Let me know what you think!
