Hooligans http://heathofee.com/2011/04/14/hooligans/ http://heathofee.com/2011/04/14/hooligans/#comments Thu, 14 Apr 2011 13:10:43 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2205 I have a busy day ahead of me, so just a quick one this morning.

I shot this during my very brief visit to Florence a couple of years ago. Nothing terribly exciting, but I had to capture this lone graffiti tag on what was an enormous brick wall.

Textured Villa http://heathofee.com/2011/04/10/textured-villa/ http://heathofee.com/2011/04/10/textured-villa/#comments Sun, 10 Apr 2011 15:05:29 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=2183 Since I’m on a bit of an Italy kick, I thought I’d share another from my time there a couple years ago. This shot is of Villa Poderaccio, the Tuscan Villa we stayed in for the week. I love the contrast in colour and shape of the red brick surrounding the door and the round stone throughout the rest of the frame.

Centred? http://heathofee.com/2011/02/03/centred/ http://heathofee.com/2011/02/03/centred/#comments Thu, 03 Feb 2011 14:08:38 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1695 I was really excited about this shot as soon as I snapped the brackets, and I had planned on waiting a while before processing it. Well, I couldn’t resist, so I gave it a go last night. Turns out this beam wasn’t quite as centred in the warehouse as I thought, so despite the fact it’s right in the centre of the frame, it doesn’t cut the wall behind it exactly in half. I’m still a fan of the shot, and that’s what’s important 🙂

Bricks and Bars http://heathofee.com/2010/11/03/bricks-and-bars/ http://heathofee.com/2010/11/03/bricks-and-bars/#comments Wed, 03 Nov 2010 12:33:22 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1236 So, after having Photoshop crash on me 4 times while trying to process this image a couple days ago, I decided to bite the bullet and buy myself a much needed new computer. I pulled the trigger last night on a refurbished iMac, and I couldn’t be more excited. Making the switch from PC to Mac feels a little daunting right now, but once I’ve got everything up and running I know I’ll be extremely happy. If anyone has any tips for making the transition as smooth as possible, I’m all ears!

Peoples Lunch http://heathofee.com/2010/10/30/peoples-lunch/ http://heathofee.com/2010/10/30/peoples-lunch/#comments Sat, 30 Oct 2010 17:09:07 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1225 It’s fun to explore the more hidden and off-the-beaten path places in the city in which you live. Although I’ve lived in Calgary for basically all my life, I had never really explored the back alleys of our downtown core until very recently. The front facades of all these buildings have been meticulously redone to add curb appeal, but the alleys behind these old buildings look the same as they did years and years ago. It’s a great way to catch a small glimpse of the past.

A lot of the old buildings in this alley still had stenciled lettering and logos from businesses that have long since gone under, and it was fun to see and capture them. Below is a view looking up above an old doorway that once invited passers by to a ‘Peoples Lunch’…hope you enjoy!

Red or Gray? http://heathofee.com/2010/10/22/red-or-gray/ http://heathofee.com/2010/10/22/red-or-gray/#comments Fri, 22 Oct 2010 14:37:04 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1191 I thought I might as well continue with the nighttime urban theme I’ve had going for my past two images since I’ve been having so much fun processing them. These two different coloured doors into this old brick building caught my attention…mostly because it reminded me of the classic red pill/blue pill question asked of Neo in The Matrix. So…which door will you choose?

4-3-2-1 http://heathofee.com/2010/10/21/4-3-2-1/ http://heathofee.com/2010/10/21/4-3-2-1/#comments Thu, 21 Oct 2010 12:57:08 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1187 I need to start shooting urban landscapes at night more often. The man-made light can make for some very interesting shadows and the darkness just adds an extra dimension of drama. I was out shooting two nights ago and had an absolute blast, plus I came back with a whole bunch of keepers…always a good thing.

I almost kept walking right past this scene on my way to the older, grungier parts of this alleyway, but I stopped myself to compose this shot. Those numbered grey loading bays and the contrasting yellow pillars were just begging to be bracketed 🙂

Telephone Building http://heathofee.com/2010/10/16/telephone-building/ http://heathofee.com/2010/10/16/telephone-building/#comments Sat, 16 Oct 2010 23:11:11 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1172 This building is right across the street from my office downtown, and I see it every day when I walk back to my car. For most of the summer I had been telling myself that it would make for a pretty decent photo, so I’m glad I was able to get this shot when I was out last week.

I’m finding myself very quickly becoming a fan of Nik Color Efex Pro, and I’m about to shut everything down and install a trial version of OnOne PhotoTools and give that a try. All these photographic tools at our fingertips…we are very lucky to be living in these times! Oh, and I have a Canon TS-E 17mm lens in my possession for the next 7 days, so with any luck my next few blog entries will contain photos taken with that amazing piece of glass!

Fire Alarm Redux http://heathofee.com/2010/10/06/fire-alarm-redux/ http://heathofee.com/2010/10/06/fire-alarm-redux/#comments Wed, 06 Oct 2010 12:53:45 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1138 I posted a different shot of this same fire alarm a few weeks ago (you can find it here), and I thought I’d show it from a more conventional angle today. I don’t know what it is about this fire alarm, but I can’t seem to get enough of it! The texture of the old red brick combined with the cracked face and worn letters on the alarm itself make this image a perfect candidate for an HDR treatment to help define all that wonderful age. I’m finding myself looking for scenes with texture and grit more and more often, and although I haven’t really had the chance to photograph many of them, there are a few locations on my list. Now that life seems to have calmed down a bit, I should be able to get out and shoot some of these great spots.
