Bench – heath ofee dot com http://heathofee.com Sun, 11 Sep 2011 17:01:24 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.6 Cagey http://heathofee.com/2011/09/16/cagey/ http://heathofee.com/2011/09/16/cagey/#comments Fri, 16 Sep 2011 13:10:55 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=3292 This past weekend I was on call for work so I decided to make use of my time in an empty downtown Calgary by bringing my Canon FT-b with me. Loaded with a roll of Fuji NPH 400, I took to the streets and parks and came back with a few images I was happy with – this is one of them. #FilmFriday

Equipment:
– Canon FT-b
– Canon FD 50mm 1.4
– Fuji NPH 400
Hoya 55mm 3-stop ND
BlackRapid RS-4 Camera Strap

If You Build It? – Riding the Pine http://heathofee.com/2010/11/28/if-you-build-it-riding-the-pine/ http://heathofee.com/2010/11/28/if-you-build-it-riding-the-pine/#comments Sun, 28 Nov 2010 14:27:49 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1408 Here is the third instalment in my ‘If You Build It?’ series.

For this shot I opted to get nice and low and quite close to the end of this broken bench to really make the cracked board the focal point of the image. I also took advantage of the tilt functionality of the TS-E lens to further bring focus to the crack while throwing the rest of the bench out of focus.

Benched http://heathofee.com/2010/09/28/benched/ http://heathofee.com/2010/09/28/benched/#respond Tue, 28 Sep 2010 16:10:39 +0000 http://heathofee.com/?p=1097 I kinda feel like I’ve been benched lately. We’ve been getting an unbelievable amount of rain here in Calgary this month, and it’s been putting a serious damper on my planned photography excursions. It’s almost been two weeks since I’ve been out shooting brackets for HDR and I’m suffering from a bit of withdrawal…this has also forced me to go back through my relatively small archive of brackets to find some images worth posting. Although this is a valuable exercise, I’d much rather be shooting and processing new images.

Cedarbrae Bus Shelter from the Archives http://heathofee.com/2010/04/30/cedarbrae-bus-shelter-from-the-archives/ http://heathofee.com/2010/04/30/cedarbrae-bus-shelter-from-the-archives/#respond Fri, 30 Apr 2010 21:11:16 +0000 http://yycofee.wordpress.com/?p=709 Since I’m heading to Las Vegas tomorrow morning and won’t be back until late next week, I thought I’d post another photo right now since I’ll probably be skipping my post next week.

This past weekend I took the time to watch the HDR presentation Trey Ratcliff gave at Google Headquarters in California. I’m not going to do a full review here, but I will say that it’s well worth checking out if you want to learn a bit about HDR photography and see plenty of pretty pictures. One tip that Trey gave to new HDR photographers is to go through your old photo collection and give a few the HDR treatment for practice. Even though you’d only be working with a single RAW file instead of a number of bracketed exposures, the algorithms in Photomatix can still produce a very good HDR image. I took this to heart and went through a few dozen old photos from a photo walk I took in Cedarbrae/Braeside two years ago. I thought this detail photo of a bus shelter bench turned out kinda cool after the HDR conversion. It’s kinda gritty and dirty and old but I like it!

Canon EOS 50D, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0L, 24mm, F 8.0, ISO 100

The details: single exposure HDR tonemapped in Photomatix, color correction, contrast, clarity, sharpening in Lightroom, noise reduction in Noiseware.

Calgary Skyline from Prince’s Island Park http://heathofee.com/2010/03/03/calgary-skyline-from-princes-island-park/ http://heathofee.com/2010/03/03/calgary-skyline-from-princes-island-park/#comments Wed, 03 Mar 2010 15:08:31 +0000 http://yycofee.wordpress.com/?p=619 While on my downtown photowalk a couple weekends ago I made my way over to Prince’s Island Park and took a few shots there. It was a relatively cold morning at about -8 celsius and I wasn’t wearing the ideal footwear for tromping though the snow (slip on loafers were not a good choice) but I couldn’t resist this frost covered bench with the city skyline punctuated by a sunburst. The original crop of this image included a tree in the background on the far right of the frame but I was forced to crop it out when masking in the sky from one of the original images. I’m still working on the whole Photoshop masking process, and this one didn’t turn out exactly how I wanted…but I gotta keep trying if I’m gonna learn, right?

Canon EOS 50D, Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5, 10mm, F 16, ISO 100, 3 Exposures

This is a 3 exposure HDR image (-2,0,+2) tonemapped in Photomatix, original sky masked in from the -2 exposure with some final tweaks in Lightroom. Any critiques are more than welcome!
