Racing the Sunset

Recently my friend Brian Matiash touched on the subject of photographers always racing against the sunset/blue hour, trying to make sure we get all the shots we want before that magical light runs out for the day. I’m definitely no stranger to that feeling, and found myself in exactly that situation last week when trying to get a few shots of the setting sun before I turned my attention to the harvest moon. For me it was a bit of a double race since I was also trying to catch the gaps between cars so I could set up smack dab in the middle of the road for this shot…thankfully, I found a relatively vacant stretch of secondary highway just south of the city and had plenty of opportunity.

The sunburst is awesome Heath! Great shot!

How did your harvest moon shots come out? I had issues with cloud cover so this was the best shot I got http://www.flickr.com/photos/jsdesigns/5019987987/

Love road shots! Great sun too.

again love it!

Thanks, Jim!

Jon: I wasn’t too pleased with my harvest moon shots, unfortunately. I think I may have a couple worth working on, but nothing outstanding. I really like the super low perspective in your moon shot…very nicely done!

Beauty, Heath. Especially great processing here. My shots always look crappy when I shoot straight into the sun. What’s ur secret?

This is beautiful. Love the low angle and texture of the road along with the star pattern in the sun.

Mike, Tanya, Matty, Scott -> Thanks very, very much for your kinds words, I really appreciate it!

Matty: I wish I had a secret to share with you, but I don’t think I do. I just stop down to F 16 or smaller, flip on live view and focus manually, bracket away and hope for the best!

Wow. I thought this kind of scene was impossible to capture and you caught it perfectly.

Heath O'Fee - October 1, 2010 - 10:29 am

Very nice of you to say that, Theresa…thank you!

Hi Heath,

I have some nice sunset shots myself. I’ll have to see if I can send them to you.
