I really love how HDR processing can bring out the texture in almost any scene. That was most of the reason for me processing this shot in HDR. It was a gloomy, overcast day and there wasn’t a whole lot of dynamic range to be captured in this shot…but there was plenty of texture in the sandstone walls of Ramsay School. Calgary was once known as the ‘Sandstone City’, so there are quite a few historic sandstone buildings around the city that I have yet to photograph…I’ll have to put them all on my list!
I found it intriguing that there used to be separate boys and girls entrances to schools back in the day, so I needed to capture one of them. The red door in stark contrast with the sandstone added a bit of interest to this composition, and I’m very happy with how the texture of the sandstone came out.
